Chapter 113
HAZEL’S POV
Everyone stopped in the halls and the housemaids retreated to their chambers after Gabe roared through the palace ordering everyone to call it a night. We stood in the hallway to Darian’s office and Gabe’s voice filled every square inch of the gigantic hallways and hundreds of rooms, it traveled through doors and walls and everyone scurried with their buckets and brooms back to their tower probably feeling more safe there than in Gabe’s presence right now.
“No one can know that Darian is gone,” he said.
I watched his back as we rushed to Darian’s office. His shoulders were raised and his muscles pressed against the t-shirt he was wearing. They looked a lot alike from behind, Darian was slightly broader and his presence sucked the life out of everything he passed but other than that.
Watching him move in a hurry to find his brother I wondered If what he said was the truth.
Darian wasn’t above lying, what proof did I have that I could trust Gabe?
We walked in and he went straight to a painting that hung on the wall. The floor had a blood stain dragging from the threshold to where Gabe stood, the stain stopped by his feet.
“What is that?”
“A portal, to the council. Are you ready?” He asked and opened a drawer and pulled out a box.
Am I ready for what?
He was acting like this was all about Darian, like his brother was the only one in danger when he was the whole reason that everything was as fucked up as
it was.
“Gabe, I need you to clue me in because I’m feeling really fucking lost right now,”
“Once the portal opens we have fifteen seconds to pass through and then it will close,” he took out a ring and put the metal box back in the drawer with a gentle hand like it was worth a fortune.
“Gabe,”
He put the ring on his finger and blocked out my voice.
Fine, he can do it himself then.
C
“Where are you going?” He called.
“All you are about is him, do you even care about my sister? About me?”
He dropped the hand with the ring on and his face twisted in a grimace when he acknowledged me.
“Of course I care, Hazel- but like I told you, Darian is the only one-“
“The only one who knows where she is, yes you told me. But I still have a hundred other questions. Why did he fake her death? Why did the council take him? And why the hell should I, after everything he’s done to me, risk my life to save his?”
It looked like he finally realized what he was asking of me. He was asking me to willingly give up the opportunity for freedom for the man who made me miss it.
The Hunt was long over but it’s a staple in our world and as a girl, you don’t get free from your mate unless he chooses to give you up and let you go.
Darian would never let me go, he had too much fun with me to ever let that happen but with him gone, I had my freedom. Was I supposed to give that up?
And then what- go back to being his puppet?

Chapter 113
“There is so much you don’t know, things that aren’t mine to tell you. A whole story that was written without your knowledge,” he bit down on his lip and furrowed his brows. Gabe took the ring off and put it down on the desk.
Standing in Darian’s study under the dim light and the looming threat of the future, Gabe looked so much like his brother. It was eerie because when 1 looked at him I saw the guy that busted me out of here in the beginning and saved me at MarryBell. He was the funny, strong, and charismatic younger brother while Darian was a cold-hearted beast and a sadistic monster. Cut from the same cloth but worlds apart in personality, how did that happen?
I didn’t have to say anything for him to know that I wasn’t going anywhere with him unless he started talking.
Leaving Darian to rot in the Council would be my pleasure. But Gabe needed his brother and I couldn’t be the one responsible for them taking Darian from him; I also couldn’t go with him without a promise that once we are done, I’m free to go.
“Darian was raised to act on logic and strategy not on emotion. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you this to in any way sway your opinion of him, he is a monster- but only when he has to be,” Gabe poured a drink from the bar, one for him and one for me.
“No thank you, I’m good,”
His eyes took in mine in a tense glare and he pushed the glass into my hand.
“Trust me, you’re going to want to drink it,”
His eyes were cold and calculating, he was already working on his monologue in his mind and it looked like it pained him to share it so I took the drink and ignored the creeping fear.
“You know about Ophelia, yes?”
“Darian’s wife, the former queen. Of course, I do,” it’s Valerian history, much more interesting than Lycan history.
“Ex-wife,” Gabe corrected.
“Because she died,” I said and nodded. I know the story, everyone does, they taught us this in school.
“Did she?”
