Chapter 128
The second that Darian talked, the voices stopped, and a quiet waiting ensued. Are they going to attack? Where were they hiding- and what clever fool thought it’d be a good idea to simulate an environment that Darian and Gabriel have been in since they were children?
I was seriously reconsidering the collective intelligence of the highly esteemed Council that we’d been fooled into revering all our lives.
But we were still on their territory and somewhere in this gigantic place was a frightened little girl who needed her father.
“Let’s go,” Gabe called.
I looked up and saw Darian watching me. He never took his eyes off me but they kept shifting between the two people living inside of him- the human and
the monster.
“What’s on your mind?” He asked while the others walked ahead.
They hurried up the stairs but for some reason, Darian wasn’t in as much of a hurry anymore.
“Nothing, we should go,” I took a step, forgetting that his hand was still on my arm and it was like trying to move with a boulder attached to my body.
“Tell me,”
Footsteps echoed behind the wall and my stress levels were excelling.
“Please, we have to go, they’re coming,” I hissed.
“I’ll take care of them, tell me what’s on your mind,”
“Darian, please,”
He searched my face and looked at the door that they would soon burst through. Their steps were coming from all around us and I knew they had every entrance covered. Without a word, Darian grabbed my hand and hurried after the others up the stairs. I barely saw where we were heading but continuously looked over my shoulder to make sure that they weren’t catching up.
We ran down the hallway and through a door, falling into an empty cold room that was bigger than the ballroom in the palace. There were three closed doors, one straight ahead, one to our left, and one to our right. The floors were symmetrical black and grey squares and it was like looking through a grey lens when I stared at the beams and the empty walls.
The door on our left opened silently and Gabe stuck his head out, he waved us over with furrowed brows and an impatient glare in his moss-green eyes.
Abby was already in the room with Nate and they came to meet us at the threshold.
“Maybe we should split up, and cover all the rooms,” Abby said when she stepped out.
“Good thinking,” Nate hurried out and ran to another door. He twisted the knob and it made me somehow ill at ease seeing how the doors were unlocked- this was the most protected place in the world other than the palace, why would they leave a place like this completely unguarded? What even was this
place?
“Come on,” Gabe patted my arm, indicating that I followed him but I turned my head and saw Darian standing by the door with Abby.
They were joking, right? Of course, he wanted to be with his Bell.
I scoffed and rolled my eyes. They didn’t see me gritting my teeth to dust or pressing my feet so hard into the floors that I heard a tiny crack but I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of a reaction so I left with Gabe.
From the corner of my eye, I saw his pitying gaze drip down the side of my face and the cold was sweeping around my arms like chains pulling me down. I’ve never felt this heavy before and it bothered me to an annoying extent- Darian is the one who should be feeling this way, not me.
We were halfway across the room when a whirlwind pulled around me and Darian stood before my eyes. He bent down and grabbed the back of my legs, lifting me over his shoulder like I was a doll. A fucking puppet.

Chapter 128
“What the hell is your-”
“Shh, save your screams,”
He walked us back to the room and I saw Abby passing us with a shadowed smile, strutting her way to Gabe.
Darian closed the door behind us and I groaned when he put me down and I felt the blood rush from my head.
“You should’ve just stayed with your precious Bell,” I spat and turned on my heels.
I ran a hand through my air and felt the tangled knot that had formed on the side of my head. When I removed the ponytail my hair fell down my back and my scalp could finally breathe but everything else was still hurting, unfortunately, there wasn’t a remedy for that pain.
The room we were in was eerie and…and quite sad looking. There was one couch against the wall and a floor lamp. A desk stood in the corner with various things stacked upon it and that was it, nothing else to reveal what this room was used for.
It wasn’t a big room but it was big enough for us to stay on opposite sides- and yet I felt the hairs rise on the back of my neck and my legs tingle, telling me that he was close. I turned around and Darian closed the distance between us.
I was acutely aware of his movements and winced when he lifted his hand an inch from his side. The sorrow in his eyes was deep and tortured when he noticed it but he didn’t lower his hand, instead, he reached out and cupped my face. Whatever he was hoping my reaction would be, it clearly wasn’t this. But this was all him, everything I thought when I watched him, all of the pain that my body associated with him, it was all his doing.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm my twisting nerves.
“Open your eyes,” he said calmly, “please, look at me,”
