Chapter 137

She was pressing her small frame against the woman next to her and when I lifted my gaze all I could see was that it wasn’t Ophelia, it wasn’t her mother who walked her in here.

The woman wore a grim expression, she looked like a younger Mrs. Smith with a deep frown that had formed wrinkles around her lips. Her auburn hair was dry and bristly, held back with a thick green pin.

Kiera was watching us with her bunny held close and her eyes rounded and big, brimming with innocence and fear.

Where the hell was her mother? She shouldn’t be alone, or with whoever that crank was standing next to her. The little girl was begging to be held close but the woman wasn’t giving her anything, not even a hand to hold.

The air in the room shifted once again as yet another person entered. Stilettos clicked against the floor sounding like power as it echoed around us and her slender arms swayed at her sides while she strutted toward the group.

Ophelia walked in like she held the power like the crown was on her head and her word was law; that’s the power in her steps and the confidence on her smile- and I was learning time and time again not to ask questions that I didn’t want the answers to.

She walked past everyone, including her daughter who flickered her gaze over her mother’s back as she went to stand next to…to Mr. Light, the Council chairman.

Are you joking?

Ophelia graced his shoulder hand showing off her bejeweled fingers, diamonds the size of a tooth, and pressed a kiss to his cheek, she was practically purring next to him and watched us like we were the circus freaks.

“Gabriel, Darian,” she mused, “how good to see you guys again,” she smiled. An award-winning smile, I had to give her that.

It was like her daughter’s life hadn’t been gambled like a pair of dice or Darian hadn’t been forced to undergo torture to save Kiera’s life. So had I. A lot of people had suffered because of one woman’s choices but still, she had the nerve to stand there and smile like everything was going according to plan.

If Darian doesn’t kill her, I just might.

“The feeling isn’t mutual,” Gabriel said.

Something big covered my sight and I was suddenly staring at half of Darian’s back.

Ophelia’s giggles rang out and carved a tunnel of pain in my ear where her voice entered like acid.

“You’re protecting her from me, how cute. Tell me, Darian, did you think your feelings for her would go unnoticed?” She asked and I heard a scoff. I moved to the side to see her, he didn’t need to protect me, I was perfectly capable of doing that myself, and having the man who tormented me stand between us only ripped away at my pride.

But when I moved, he moved with me and continued covering my view.

“Did you think that I wouldn’t get jealous?” Ophelia asked but there was an edge to her tone, she was telling the truth, actually jealous of him caring for someone else.

His taste in women was horrid at best.

“What do you want?” Darian asked calmly. When I tried to move again I saw Darian inching to the side but I gently touched his arm and stepped up next to him.

Our eyes locked for a second and a second was all he needed to pass me a warning that I respectfully ignored. I wasn’t stepping back or hiding behind him.

Nothing good had come from him being in charge and making the decisions. Sure, we were all alive so far but what good was that when still played by their rules? Everything else had imploded every time he tried something, it was time for him to put his ego aside.

“Have you said hi to my daughter?” Ophelia smiled and gestured with her hand to the little girl who was pressing harder into the woman next to her,

“Kiera, sweetheart, say hello,” Ophelia encouraged.

The little girl flickered her eyes over everyone and then she looked at me and I smiled, a small one, it tugged my lips back softly enough to offer a little piece of courage and comfort. A shadowed smile crossed her lips and she tucked her little chin in.

“Hi,”

That sweet voice, so little and quiet.

I wanted to grab and hug her, to let her know that everything would be okay and that we would ensure she was safe. Her father was here and he wouldn’t let anything happen to her but she hadn’t met him since she was a baby, she probably had no idea what he looked like and I doubted that Ophelia had shown her pictures of him.

Did she even know what she was- that she was a Lycan and the sole heir of the throne- the future queen of Valeria?

“Sweetheart,” Ophelia started and the way she spoke sent an unnerving chill up my neck, “where is your father?”

Ophelia turned her head an inch looking at Darian through the side of her eye and they narrowed to thin lines while her lips pulled back in a feline grin.

“He’s dead,” Kiera said quietly.
