Chapter 141
My arms were stretched out and I was ready to catch her but her features twisted in confusion and it made sense, she had no reason to trust me. To her I was a stranger who somehow stood in her home with a King she thought wanted her mother dead, oblivious to the fact that he was her dad.
Our eyes locked in a desperate plead and I was waiting hoping that something would drive her to run to me. Kiera turned her head and her eyes fell when she looked at her mother who reached out a hand while pressing up against Mr. Light. It was nauseating to see Ophelia with the man she betrayed Darian for but it also made me think if it were a choice between Kiera and Mr. Light, who would she choose?
“Come,” Ophelia said and held out her hand for her daughter to grab.
No, please don’t…
“Kiera,” her name rolled off my tongue like a prayer.
She looked at me, glanced at my hands, and ran to her mom’s side.
Getting her out was going to be tough and I knew that whatever way we went about this, that little girls heart was going to break. She was losing her mom, however much of a bitch Ophelia was, to Kiera she was still everything.
“Now that Gabriel has done the dirty work for you, how about we end this?” The Elder spat and walked to the front of the line.

End this?
What the hell even was this? We’d been here for what felt like an eternity but nobody had made a move against Darian, they were all passively waiting for some miracle to fall on his head so what ace did the Elder have up his sleeve to suddenly make him so brave?
Darian wasn’t a threat when he sat in his cell which obviously didn’t hold him down and the Elder had lost a lot of credibility as well as a good deal of cockiness since he saw Darian standing as a free man and the cell being abandoned in whatever shape he left it in.
“Step down as King and we will let you all leave with your lives intact,”
How kind of him, especially since Gabe just killed four of his Dark Guards- I could practically hear his legs shake from fear though he’d never let it show.
Men were funny that way, their mouths were huge with mind-rotting idiocies spewing at any given moment but when it came to admitting your fears or, even better, meeting them, they cowered behind a mask of unyielding strength and determination.
“Forgive me, Elder, but what dirty work do you suppose my brother has done on my behalf?”
I swear everyone hissed a breath and held it shut in their lungs at the same time, everyone except for a young girl who couldn’t take her eyes off the King.
The Elder choked on his breath like the rest of us when Darian spoke and he fumbled with his words, slowly the mask was falling, revealing the madman
beneath.
“The Dark Guards, he killed them,” the Elder gritted his teeth and the words left his lips in a spitting hiss.
“That? Oh no,” Darian moved for the first time on his own accord without it being to shield me. One foot in front of the other, he drew to his fullest size, his back even broader and his shoulders rolled back in a powerful stance. Each muscle bulged when he moved and the shreds of his shirt hung loose on his front. Darian looked at the Elder and held his gaze, a single gaze made him shrivel like a piece of fruit left under the sun,
“That was just the entrée,” he said, “I’ll be serving you the main course. Do not worry, sir, my hands are plenty filthy without my brother’s interference,” he licked his lips and his entire body softened visibly when he turned to Kiera.
“Can you close your eyes, princess- and put your hands over your ears for me? Hum your favorite song as loud as you can and when I tap your shoulder three times you can stop,” he narrowed his eyes but relaxed his muscles, a gentle gaze between them and his lips tugged back in a friendly grin. “Deal?” He
winked.
Kiera was reluctant, she looked between Darian and her mother but something visibly changed and a sudden shift rounded her eyes and her jaw dropped to the floor. The bunny fell from her hand, strings had come loose and stuffing was falling out of the back. Kiera squeezed her eyes shut as hard as she could without any further instructions and she put her hands over her ears and started humming a song. She listened to him.

Chapter 141
She swayed on her feet, her pink shoes tapped against the floor on certain melodies and she seemed entranced in her own world, one where she wasn’t subjected to pain and death and now that she was safe- that’s when the monster could finally awaken.
Darian’s eyes glowed golden and his growls choked the air and pressed against the walls- the power of his sound broke the bulbs of the lamps, shattering the glass as they fell in shards around us like rain.
“Finally, huh?”
I jumped and looked beside me at Gabe who put his elbow on my shoulder, a giddy look spread across his face as he watched his brother transform- not into a Lycan, but into something different than the human you’d think him to be if you saw him. The rage took on its own appearance, it darkened his aura and mellowed his energy while everything you felt was anger and destruction. I felt unsafe and scared even though I was behind him, protected by him, but I still took a step back and coiled my fingers to keep them from shaking.
