Chapter 144
HAZEL’S POV
Time was running out. The Elder was putting away his knife, drops of his blood fell into a pool that had formed under his hand and his throat bobbed when he mumbled incoherent words. I turned my head and watched Ophelia practically dragging Kiera by her hair at this point- okay not by her hair but she was peeling her daughter’s hands away from her ears to make her listen.
Kiera’s eyes remained closed, she was still listening to Darian over her mother, that’s good.
For some reason, the Dark Guards stopped falling into the room and every last one of the highly trained mercenaries that the Elder had called for were lying limbless and dead on the floor.
They looked like broken chess pieces, falling on the game board.
Chess was another nifty thing they took from the humans. We took from the humans.
It was strategic, and calculated, not one move was made without a forethought of what the consequences could be and it also taught pattern recognition. Every Alpha had a board set up in their office, but how many of them played was an entirely different story.
The Elder clearly didn’t or he would’ve foreseen the much obvious outcome of this ambush.
Sending his Dark Guards in here thinking they stood a chance against not one but two Lycans was naive beyond measure. He wasn’t known for his nativity, he had a plan.
I was trying to look everywhere at once but my eyes always came back to Kiera in the center of the madness.
Ophelia shook her roughly and preyed her hands away but not for longer than a second before Kiera pressed them back over her ears.
“You little brat, listen to me! I am your mother!” Ophelia’s hand rose in the air and her fingers tightened with her open hand.
Her cheeks were redder than a perfect summer cherry and her lips curled over her gritting teeth as she cut her hand through the air and aimed for Kiera’s cheek.
That psycho bitch was going to hit her daughter because she wouldn’t listen to her psychotic screaming.
Kiera’s eyes were still closed and she was humming the song for a third time.
Ophelia’s eyes held a blazing fire and I felt my feet moving, running- I pushed off from the floor and watched her eyes widen in realization seconds before I knocked her to the ground and our heads pounded together in a blow that shook my brain around in my skull.
Ophelia growled, bared her teeth, and looked more angry than she had all night as she extended her claws. I felt something cold on my side when I leaned over her about to land a punch- the cold wetness zippered down my back and Ophelia watched me, her nostrils flared while her breathing calmed down noticeably.
“NO!” I looked over and saw Darian’s eyes glowing as he watched me with what seemed like true fear.
He wasn’t paying attention to the guards that were in front of him- why was he turning to me?
I saw the crimson drops building a smaller puddle under my leg and staining Ophelia’s lemon-yellow blouse on the way down.
The wound was sufficient but the worst part was that her filthy ass claws were still lodged deep into my side. She was faster than I would’ve thought. It shocked me how fast things registered in that head of hers- and here I was thinking that Mr. Light did everything but wipe her ass for her.
“How warm and cozy,” her eyes were narrowed to slits and she pushed her claws in further- now the tips of her fingers followed and a guttural groan pressed past my gritting teeth.
If I could choke on my intestines, this is how I imagine that would feel.
“You fucking bitch,” blood pooled in my mouth and it took a moment for me to clear the brain fog and realize that I was on top. I was straddling her, her

face was wide open and I was sitting on top of her, not doing shit.
“Consider this my blessing for dating Darian,” she pulled her claws out to reload and dug them into either side of my waist.
The Alpha’s Hunt
