Chapter 147
Ophelia’s rose-scented perfume was burning up my nose and her screeching sounds were making it hard to land a good punch when all I wanted was to cover my damn ears.
Gabe and Mr. Light were occupied in their own battle and I tasted the blood that entered my mouth when she clawed at my cheek.
I saw everyone except for the Elder, where the hell was he?
Nate was walking alongside the wall heading for the door and I looked away, knowing what was about to happen.
Gabe caught him, of course, he did- did Nate seriously think he was getting away after what he’d done? A growl filled the room and Nate froze in his spot.
He intercepted Nate’s escape route, and a look of pure betrayal spread across Gabe’s face just long enough for Nate to see his life flash before his eyes. The Lycan’s had a blood-thirst unlike any other I had ever seen and I’d heard about it but what I hadn’t heard about was their love for the kill. I don’t know if it was the history that Gabe shared with Nate or a small speck of empathy for what Nate used to be, but instead of a gruesome pain-filled ending, Gabe slowly reached out his claws while Nate stood completely still. He punctured the skin and dug his claw into Nate’s neck while the life slowly drained from his eyes and he fell into what I could only describe as a slumber.
That had to have been painful for Gabe, taking his friend’s life like that.
But he didn’t have a lot of time to torture himself with the fact that he’d done it since Mr. Light was on his feet about to lunge and Ophelia was on top of me throwing punches while I shielded my face.
Everyone was in a battle, everyone except for Kiera who was actually showing the tiniest smile as she hummed her song for maybe the fiftieth time. Abby kept her distance from Kiera to have a good overlook of everyone around her- that little girl had never been safer in her life.
I looked at Ophelia, and then back at Kiera.
I don’t know what Ophelia had done to the little girl through the years but I could make sure that she never subjects her to anything bad again. Kiera needed her father and it was right there on the surface of her eyes and in everything she’s done- Ophelia doesn’t love her daughter in the way that a mother should, she doesn’t protect her, she just uses her for her own selfish gain. There was a moment of pause between us where I couldn’t move my hand, but I had to push past it.
It was quick and painless, for me at least as I reached up and grabbed her throat, I dug my claws into her flesh and she gaped, blood seeped from between her lips and her eyes glistened widely.
“Ophelia,” I heard Mr. Light breathe her name.
He turned his head and Gabe took the opportunity.
“You will meet her soon,” Gabe said and reached his hand into Mr Light’s chest, when he pulled it out he had his heart in his hand and it moved, beating as though it fought for a life that was already over.
Ophelia fell to the side, choking on her blood and her eyes flickered over her unknowing daughter- I watched the tear fall from her eye and listened to her choking sounds when she tried to call out to Kiera.
I held my breath, I don’t know what good it did but somehow I felt like it helped the pain that throbbed in my chest.
Kiera was five years old and I just took her mother from her. She lost the only parental figure she’d ever known.
The floor was cold under my palms when I pushed off from the floor and my feet stepped in the puddles of blood when I stood.
I turned around, thinking I’d see Darian and Zade half dead in their fighting but they were fine, barely a cut on either of them- and they were watching me.
Zade’s eyes softened and his face realized as a black fog filled the room starting from our feet and then covering our vision. The fog parted in a path that led out into the hallway and Zade stood heaving with his hands by his side and his eyes glowing. I could look at his eyes forever, there was something about seeing the blue that made me feel like I was staring into the universe.
“Go,” Zade ordered.
Chapter 147
Darian was reluctant, he looked at Zade and bit down on his jaw.
“Come on,” I said.
Darian walked over to Kiera and his hand hovered in the air for a second as he looked over Ophelia’s body on the floor. Zade noticed, his eyes washed over them and the fog spread across her body, hugging her like a casket and hiding her from Kiera. It was like nothing existed behind the fog, all of the bodies were hidden except for a few that were closest to the door.
Darian tapped her shoulder three times and the humming stopped, she slowly lowered her hands and her eyes fluttered open, staring widely into his.
“Let’s go home,” he said and lifted her in his arms.
We followed the path and it led us to the Elder’s office where the portrait hung.
All we could see was what the path allowed us to see, the rest was hidden, or maybe it was us that was hidden- whatever Zade did I was grateful. Without him, we might’ve still gotten out but Darian and Gabe would have a lot more blood on their hands and many more lives would be taken.
Too many people had died already, many who didn’t deserve it. The Dark Guards thought they were protecting the Council and the Elder but they were just doing the dirty work for a cause that they knew nothing about.
Gabe took out the ring and turned it- the portal opened up and they walked through the swirling light but before I entered I looked over my shoulder and bowed my head subtly as a thank you to Zade who was standing in the middle of the office. His disheveled hair fell in front of his face and the snake tattoo was slithering under his skin like it was making itself comfortable.
He winked and lifted his head, loud sounds echoed outside in the hallway and he looked across the office before whipping his head back.
“Go,” he mouthed and I stepped through the portal.
