Chapter 178
Breathing fresh fall air and looking at everything slowly dying around me was the only thing that calmed me down and allowed me a moment to think.
The chilly breeze swept across my arms and cooled my skin. It was a welcome change from the constant heat that continuously consumed my senses whether it be a burning desire for Darian’s closeness or the anger he so easily invoked in me.
After hearing that Nora wouldn’t be working at the palace anymore I just needed to be alone. Darian tried to stop me but the man from his meeting intercepted his path and reminded him that a contract had to be signed today, he had to finish his meeting and I left without looking back.
Maybe I hadn’t been the nicest person to her over the months we’d known each other but it hit me like a brick in the face that she wasn’t just my friend- she was my only friend.
It was quiet and peaceful at night except for a few Guards that patrolled around the palace. It gave me ample time to think, unfortunately.
She can’t leave, I would forever beat myself up over the fact that it took for this to happen to make me realize it but I needed her here. Nora was the one person keeping me sane through everything. Whenever I wanted to choke Darian or hide in a hole for the rest of my miserable existence, she got me out of it. She made me feel like it was okay to be angry, sad, and hurt. Not that I didn’t know that but it was really easy for things to feel lonely here and having someone knock sense into my twisted mind was my only form of survival.
The sound of something rustling around the corner broke my train of thought and I looked to see if someone was coming.
Shit, I had completely forgotten that Angus was coming here. It slipped my mind and I didn’t tell Darian.
I tried mind-linking him but it was still blocked and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to kill this fucker. He talked to Kiera, he met Mathilda, I couldn’t let him continue to be a threat.
The palace was still busy with chatter from maids and Guards but nobody was coming out and I wasn’t about to lose him because I ran inside to get Darian.
I hurried around the corner, my fingers coiled and I was prepared that he might fight back. Maybe he wasn’t alone. If I saw Zade with him I swear to god I will kick his ass straight to hell. But when I rounded the corner he stood there meekly, in the same spot I’d met him last time and he raised his hands in
surrender.
“I come in peace,”
“I’ll make sure you die in it too,” I growled and extended my claws.
“Hazel, I’m sorry about how things ended during my earlier visit. I never meant to offend you, I just thought that of all people, you would understand,”
What a day of confessions but I wasn’t naive, he wouldn’t come all this way and risk his life to apologize.
“Why are you back?”
“To see, one last time, if there’s anything I can do to persuade you into joining us?”
Elise was with the girls, Gabe was probably with Nora and Darian was in the meeting with the Bells and the Guards. Everyone was inside and everyone was safe. I just had to remind myself of that because this seemed more like a distraction than anything else.
With everyone inside and secured I could bring myself to land for a moment- with the human.
“Why is it that only I can smell you? Nobody else knew that you were in the palace or even within the border.”
Angus pulled his furry jacket tighter around himself. Another way that werewolves are superior is that we can handle extreme cold without needing to skin
an animal.
“Do you believe in magic?” He asked.
“You mean witches and warlocks?”
He nodded in response.

Chapter 178
“Their existence is a fact,”
“Then you know that they have all kinds of herbs, potions, spells, and other fun trinkets that can do just about anything a person wants,”
“You have a witch?” I could not believe this. First werewolves, now witches?
“They came with the wolves. All they needed was your DNA to tie my scent to you and you alone,”
“How did they get it?” I hated this, random people weren’t supposed to willy-nilly get my DNA.
This was more than a breech of privacy, do you know what those voodoo workers can use it for? Anything.
They would need hair or skin or a nail and I can’t think of a situation where they could’ve obtained it.
“They got your blood from some woman,” he said shaking his head.
I never gave my blood to anyone. What woman would’ve gotten her paws on blood? The list of people I wanted to kill was growing longer name by name.
“What woman?”
“I don’t remember her name, just that she was a Lady,”
No. Fucking. Way.
That little skank used the blood she drew from me the night of the Hunt and handed it over to a witch!
I stared in disbelief at Angus’s face and patiently waited for my feet to land back on the ground but I was too stunned to say a word and too angry to pretend like this wasn’t a big pile of shit. Nothing worked, the calming cold breeze or the sound of nothingness as it laid over the pack like a comforting blanket.
