Chapter 15 – Trap
–LIA’S POV–

My mouth fell open, and I glared at Zane. “Why would you bring me here? I’m not going inside,” I stated.
“Relax,” he rolled his eyes, “there’s nobody home.”
I scowled. “That is all the more reason not to go in!”
“Come on, Lia,” Zane sighed, stepping closer to me and taking my wrist.
“No,” I cried, “let me go, Zane.”
“No,” he mimicked my tone, “come on in, Lia.”
“Zane–” I began, but he shushed, pressing the index finger of his free hand on my lips.
“You want me to throw you over my shoulder and carry you inside?” he asked, his tone low.
I stared up at him, a shiver crawling through me, while those stupid tingles erupted under my skin. When the hell would that stop? One would think I’d be used to his touch by now.
“I’m not gonna hurt you,” he repeated for the hundredth time. “Can’t you trust me?”

I looked into his eyes, the shades of blue giving me a sense of calm.
“You’ve… you’ve never done anything to earn it,” I said softly.
Zane raised his brows. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
“What about when I got you of a locker?”
“A locker your friends stuffed me in.”
“So?” He scoffed. “That’s even better. I stood against my friends for you.”
“Yeah, for the first time in ten years. After your friends tortured me for a decade for spilling a drink on you when we were babies.”
“Alright, fair enough. But I’ve changed how, Lia. You can really not see it?” he asked.
I shook my head. “It could all be a trap.”
He gently pushed me back, pressing me against his car. My heart raced, breath hitching immediately.
“Okay,” he said softly, leaning in closer to me. “So you can’t see

I swallowed, as butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Zane placed his hands on either side of me, making sure I had no escape. He began leaning in again, closer and closer to me, until our faces were mere inches away.

But Zane’s hand travelled to chin, and he forced me to face him again. “Why are you always so afraid of me, Lia?” he whispered, his eyes boring into mine. “I dare you to stare back at me.”
I blew air from my nose, holding his gaze.
The corner of his mouth curled up. “There. Is that hard for you, love?”
“Not at all,” I replied, my voice a quiet whisper.
“What about now?” he moved even closer, his gaze dropping to my lips. He licked his own, before he stared into my eyes again.
My heart, meanwhile, had gone into a frenzy, trying its level best to expose me to him.
As if he could hear, his smirk widened.
“It’s not hard at all,” I stated. “Although you did look away just

Zane chuckled, the sound so deep and sexy, it sent a wave of heat through my body. “You can’t blame me, Little Lia. Not when your lips are so close to mine. You know I’d have to only lean in an inch, and they’d be mine.”
I sucked in a breath, heat rising to my cheeks.
“Move—move away,” I tried, placing my hands on his chest. But I didn’t even try to push him, my body too weak to fight this. Zane was magnetic, and I felt like I was iron.
“Why?” Zane teased. “Am I making you nervous?”
My throat went dry. “You’re… making me uncomfortable.”
“Is that so?” He raised a brow.
“Yes,” I forced out.
“Okay, I’ll move away. But under two conditions.” He stared at my lips again, and bit his own for a second, before releasing it.
“What?” I asked, my voice almost pained. I couldn’t take this. He was driving every sense in my body mad.
“You will answer a question truthfully, and don’t try lying because I’ll find out.”

“Fine,” I muttered.
“And you’ll go inside with me, without being afraid.”
“I can’t guarantee that,” I replied.

“Okay, you’ll just go inside with me. Even if you’re terrified, although there isn’t any reason for you to be. Deal?”
“Why do you want to take me in? Why did you bring me here?”
“Lia,” he leaned in even closer, making me squeal and turn my face away. Zane laughed, the sound warming my chest. “Deal?”
“Alright, deal! Just ask your stupid question,” I begged.
“The way you feel about me, the way you’re reacting to proximity, and my touch, do you react the same way

to his?”
I blinked a couple of times. I did feel these same odd tingles when he touched me. But… no. Blake was different. Zane was electric. He was consuming.
“No, not exactly,” I said honestly. “But you shouldn’t be happy about it because I only feel positive things when I’m with him,” I added. I was lying. I didn’t want Zane to get ahead of himself.

Zane grinned. “The first part was true. The second, not so much.”
“It is true,” I lied again.
“Really?”

“Yes.”
“Would you care to elaborate on your answer then? If you feel only positive things with him, what do you feel when you’re with
me?”
I paused.
Excited. Thrilled. Tense. Nervous.
“Afraid,” I whispered.
“And?”
“Worried.”
“And?”
“That’s it.”
Zane clicked his tongue. “It’s not nice to lie, Lia. Bad girl.”

Oh God, why did that make my heart jump in my chest?
What was wrong with me?
I wanted to cry.

“I answered your question. Now get away from me. Please.”
Zane stared at me for a second longer, then finally stepped away, releasing me from his closeness. I sighed, glad to be able to breathe again.
“Let’s go inside now.”
“I still don’t know why I’m here,” I muttered.
“You’ll find out soon enough. Come.” He gestured for me to start walking, and rolling my eyes, I obliged.
I think I knew why I was so afraid. It wasn’t of him. It was of myself, my own feelings.
I was afraid I was going to fall right into his trap. And it would be willingly.
