I didn’t want that. I never wanted to put him in any kind of danger.
Or was I overthinking this? Could Zane simply be upset because my mom was rude to him? He didn’t seem like the guy to give up so easily. His friends didn’t quit bullying me even after my mom scolded them multiple times. There was no way he would quit pursuing me just because she was rude to him.
But then where was he?
At this point, I was considering showing up to his house. Or at least giving him a call.
But I couldn’t do that. Not when I knew what that would mean.
If he found out that I was affected by his absence, only God knew what that would lead to. I had to stay away from him. I had to stay away from both of them—all of those werewolves. My life did not need this complication.
I heard the bell, and took a deep breath, gathering myself. I couldn’t just sit there and freak out. I had to pay attention to school and my grades.
I stepped out and washed my hands, glancing at myself in the mirror. Letting out a heavy sigh, I walked out of the washroom, only to pause and frown. A buzz of chatter had me surrounded, and everybody stared in one direction, towards the entrance of the hallway. I stepped forward and glanced there too, my breath

Zane Adams and his Hounds were back. But he was not alone.
He stood near the lockers, a girl leaning against one of them, as he smiled down at her, his arm resting above her head on the wall. She said something to him, and he leaned in closer to her, down to her ear.
I turned away, my eyes wide. A ringing sound filled my ears.
So this was why he wasn’t showing up to school. Why he wasn’t texting me, calling me or sneaking into my bedroom anymore.
He had someone else. He’d been busy with her.
An ache broke out in my heart, making me suck in a breath.
What was this feeling?
I frowned, turning around to look at him.
Zane had leaned away from the girl now, and was staring directly at me.
A tear rolled down my cheek, and I wiped it off, clenching my jaw.
Why had he been flirting with me, trying to get me when he could simply get another girl so easily?

Before he could do or say anything, I turned away again and bolted, as fast as I could.
“Lia!” I heard him call out.
But I didn’t stop.
I ran through the hallways, hot tears rolling down my cheeks, until my feet refused to carry me further. The janitor’s closet happened to be closeby, so without thinking, I entered, closing the door shut.
I leaned against the wall, covering my mouth with my hands, as the pain of betrayal spread through me.
But why did I feel this way?
I should have been happy. He was leaving me alone. That is what I had wanted.
Then why did it feel like my heart was being ripped to shreds?
Had I fallen in love with him?
Or was it that bond they kept talking about?
Would I constantly feel this way if they moved on from me?
