Chapter 39 – Arrow
–LIA’S POV–
Lucky Draw
Blake drove us to a gorgeous, high–end restaurant again, one I could never afford. The dinner went exactly like it did the last time, on my birthday, except this time, I knew why I felt those sparks in my skin every time we made contact. He apologised for the rogue wolf incident multiple times, and by the fourth time, I had to snap at him to make him quit asking for my forgiveness.
“You have done enough to make up for what happened, alright?” I said. “I wasn’t hurt. Nothing went wrong. Let’s move past that.”
He rubbed his thumb over my knuckles. “Would it be okay if I sat beside you?”
m
We were sitting opposite each other at the moment. I glanced at the spot beside me. The sofas were large enough to fit both of us very easily.
“Of course,” I said.
Blake stood up from his seat and sat down beside me, turning towards me, giving me his full attention. He took both my hands in his. “You’re a sweetheart, Lia. And I honestly do not know what I did to deserve someone like you. I don’t know why the Goddess destined me with you, when you clearly deserve so much better.”

The thought of destiny and mates made my stomach twist. I laughed nervously. “Maybe she wasn’t so sure. That’s why she gave me two options.”
Immediately, his face fell a little. I pursed my lips, and he turned his face away from me, looking to the side.
“It pains me to know that someone else shares what we have.”
“Zane says the same thing. Somewhat. And I’ll give you both the same answer. I share a different bond with both of you.”
“How so?”
“Well, with you it’s… like this.” I shrugged, smiling. “You were the new boy, you saved me from bullies. You became my friend first, and then it became something more. It’s almost… human. Slow, steady. There were a few ups and downs, but that’s
natural.”
Blake smiled, nodding. “That is what I wanted to give you, Lia. A human experience, even if I’m not. But then there was a twist in our story and I had to improvise, and I—I messed up.”
I nodded in understanding. “I get it. It’s not like you’ve had mates before. It’s somewhat new for both of you too.”
“Yeah,” he said softly. There was a short moment of silence, and then he spoke. “What is it like with Zane?”

“Exciting,” I said the first word that popped into my head. I wanted to be honest with him. And with myself. “Thrilling.
Passionate.”
“Passionate?” he asked, his hold on my hands tightening slightly.
My heart rate spiked, and he immediately loosened his hold. “Sorry,” he said, “I didn’t mean to do that.”
“It’s okay, you didn’t hurt me. It just startled me.”
“Sorry,” he said again, “I’m trying to be more careful.”
“I know, I can see.”
“You were saying?”
“Yeah… With Zane, it’s unexpected. It’s new and old. You spend years knowing a person from afar, thinking you’re invisible to them. You’re even a little afraid of them. And then one day, they’re breaking into your bedroom, and more than fear, you feel exhilaration. Their closeness stirs feelings inside you, feelings you didn’t even know could exist. You were supposed to hate them forever, and yet when you look at them, the world blurs. It’s sudden, it’s surprising, and at the same time, terrifying. Because you do not know why it’s happening. You do not know how much of it is real. And you keep questioning whether what you have could exist without supernatural

interference.”
Lucky Draw
“It wouldn’t,” Blake said at once. “I don’t mean to try and influence you, Lia, but if it was supposed to exist without the bond, it would have happened before he turned sixteen.”
“Maybe you’re right,” I said. “But the same could be said for you too. You met me when you were sixteen already. Maybe you too wouldn’t have spared me another glance if I wasn’t your mate.”
He opened his mouth to deny it, but seemed to catch himself.
“You’re right,” he said then, “I guess there’s no way to know.”
“There isn’t.”
“Yeah.”
Blake stared at me, his green eyes reflecting the golden lights of the restaurant.
He reached forward and tucked my hair behind my ear, fingers brushing against my skin. I closed my eyes, letting myself enjoy the touch. Welcoming it.
“My mom really likes you,” I said.
“I know,” Blake chuckled, taking my hands again. “What about you?”

I smiled. “I do too,” I admitted.
“Promise?”
Lucky Draw
“Promise, Blake. I really do like you. You just scared me when
you lashed out.”
“I know, I’m–”
“Don’t apologise,” I warned.
He pursed his lips. “Barely caught myself.” He chuckled.
I laughed too. “Let’s move on. No point in dwelling in the past.”
“You’re right. My smart girl.”
The words sent a wave of heat through my chest.
“This is nice,” I said softly, glancing down at our connected. hands. “It’s peaceful.”
“It is. And I intend to fill every aspect of your life with the same peace and sense of security. If you’d let me.”
I stared into his eyes, my gaze lowering to his nose, then his lips.
“I… I don’t know if I want this, Blake. It’s very complicated. I’m human. You’re a werewolf. Zane too. I don’t know how any of
this will work.”

“I could show you, Lia,” he offered.
“Show me what?”
Lucky Draw
“I could take you home, if you’d come with me. I could introduce you to my pack. There are a number of werewolf–human couples. in my pack. You could see how they live. Talk to them. Ask them what it’s like. No human will ever make you as happy as a werewolf will.”
“Isn’t it the same for you too, then? Wouldn’t you be happier with a werewolf mate?”
“No,” he scoffed, “I will only be happy with my mate. It doesn’t matter who it is. But if you choose to be with a human, he could cheat, he could stop loving you, he could even leave. But at werewolf never gives up on his mate, no matter what.”
The idea did excite me.
But only for a few moments.
Because the very next one, an arrow lodged itself into Blake’s shoulder.
