Chapter 92 – Mom and Dad–3
“Of course,” Mom said quickly.
I frowned.
What was that just now?
Was I overthinking it? Overanalysing every little thing?
Or did they just have an odd exchange?
I pursed my lips.
I had to ask them.
It was now or never.
“Mom?” I said, my voice small.
“Hmm?”
“Is there… is there something I do not know about my
childhood?”
Both of them froze, heads snapping towards me.

I pushed off the counter, crossing my arms over my chest.
“I have my reasons,” I said.
“What reasons, Lia?” Mom asked.
“I can’t tell.”
Mom and Dad exchanged glances. They looked afraid.

“I turned sixteen this year, guys,” I said softly, stepping closer to them. “I have a boy in my life who I think I might spend the rest of my life with. I’m not being bullied anymore. So I think I’m finally in the emotional headspace where I can handle the truth.” I took a deep breath, taking one of Mom’s hands, and one of Dad’s. “I think I have always known it, deep down,” I lied, hoping to make my case stronger. “But now I’m finally ready to hear it from you.”
“How could you know?” Dad cried, looking deeply hurt. “I love you more than words can express, Lia. You’re my baby. I met you when you were barely a few days old. I brought you up, I stayed by your mom’s side through thick and thin.”
Tears welled up in my eyes. “You’re not my real father?” I whispered, the words sounding absolutely bullshit.

How could he not be my real father?
Dad frowned. “I thought you know,” he said softly.

I sniffed, a tear rolling down my cheek. My throat burned. “Who is it then?”
Dad glanced at Mom. “She never told me,” he said softly.
I looked at Mom, frowning. “Mom. Who is my… who is my biological father?”
Mom’s gaze shifted from me to Dad, her heartbeat so loud I thought even Dad could hear it.
I squeezed her hand gently. “Mom, it’s okay. You can tell us now. Please, I—I deserve to know.”
She broke into sobs, slapping her free hand over her mouth.
My eyes widened in shock, taken aback by her reaction.
Dad and I exchanged a glance, both of us confused.
“It’s okay,” he said to her, pulling her to his chest. “What’s wrong? Relax, it’s okay.”
“No, no it’s not,” Mom cried, crying uncontrollably. “I don’t deserve you. I don’t deserve either of you.”

“Mom, don’t say that,” I frowned, gently taking her arm and turning her towards me. “No matter who my biological father is, it doesn’t matter. Everyone makes mistakes. Sometimes we fall for the wrong people. There is nothing to cry about.”
“But there is, Lia. Because I do not know who your father is.”
Oh.
This, I didn’t expect.
“You know why? Because I don’t even know who your biological mother is!”
Now I stepped back, my mouth falling open.
Dad stared at her too, his face full of shock.
“What… what are you saying?” he asked.
Mom wiped away her tears, staring at me with sadness. “I had always wanted a baby, Lia.” She sniffed. “We tried for years, but it didn’t happen. It took a toll on us, and we separated for three years. Not divorced, just taking some time away. A few days before your father reached out to me again, I found you on the doorstep of where I was staying. I searched for your parents for a week, I asked around, I complained to the authorities. But no–” her voice broke, making her take a pause. She took a deep breath and regained her composure.

“No one came forward to take you. So I took it upon myself to keep you. You were barely a few days old, so I got you registered as my baby. And I registered your dad’s name as the father. He received a call and reached out to me, begging me to return to him, ready to accept you as his. He thought you were my child, and he was willing to love you like his own. So I never told him the truth. We got back together because of you, Lia. And you brought us the utmost joy.” She stepped closer and took my face in her hands. “You’re my daughter, Lia. You are my baby. Whoever your real parents were, they didn’t deserve you anyway. You’re mine, and Dave’s. Please don’t leave us. Please forgive me for keeping this a secret.”
The earth had shifted from beneath my feet.
Hot tears rolled down my cheeks as I stared at her, still parted in shock.
I could not believe this.
How was this possible?
How did I never guess?

“Lia,” Mom sobbed, taking my arms. “Please, my baby, say something. Please forgive me. I didn’t mean to keep this from you, but I was terrified of your reaction—and of your dad’s. Please forgive me, both of you.”
I took my hands in hers, and gently removed them from my

“Mom, you’ll always be my mom. And Dad will always be my dad. But… I’m gonna need some time alone to digest all of this. I—I need… a moment. Please. Ex—excuse me.”
I turned away and rushed up the stairs, my breath heavy, heart pounding in my chest.
“Lia!” I heard Mom call out to me, but I didn’t stop.
I couldn’t.
My entire world was collapsing around me.
Everything I thought I knew about myself was a lie.
Zane…
I needed Zane.
