Chapter 137 – Daydreaming
–LIA’S POV–

“Where have you been all weekend?” Christy slapped my arm, scowling at me.
We were walking around school, making our way to class. Zane and his Hounds were following close behind.
“I was just home, studying,” I replied.
It was technically true, at least for Sunday.
“Why didn’t we have our movie night, Leslie Snow?”
I laughed. “There just wasn’t–”
“Leslie Snow?” Zane said, falling into step with us. “That’s your name?”
I opened my mouth to reply, but Christy beat me to it.
“Of course, Zane, you don’t even know your girlfriend’s full name?”
Zane stared at her, then glanced at me. “She’s lying.”
I nodded. “Yes. She’s lying. She always said my name was loo short to be a real one, and that there must be a longer version of

“I’m desperately hungry,” Ajax muttered.
“When are you not?” Warner asked in a bored tone.

“I skipped breakfast,” Christy said. “My dad offered me oatmeal. I told him I’d rather starve.”
“Oatmeal isn’t bad,” Sheila commented, not turning to glance at

“It is if you’re not trying to keep a model figure like yours,” Christy retorted.
“You think I look like
“Duh.”
because I eat carefully?”
“I’m a werewolf, honey, I have a crazy metabolism.”
Christy glanced at me in question.
“Don’t look at me. I’m new to this too.”
We made our way to the cafe, the one place in school you could never find empty. Zane held the door open for us, and we slipped into our usual table—me and Zane on one side, Christy across, and the Hounds scattered nearby.
Zane’s arm rested on the back of my chair, warm and casy like he belonged there. I leaned slightly into it without thinking.

“What does everybody want?” Ajax asked. “I’ll get it.”
“I want–” Christy began, only to be cut off.
“I was only talking to werewolves.”
Christy scowled. “Rude.”
“Lia?” Ajax asked.
“French fries would do.”
“Hey,” Christy frowned. “She’s not a werewolf.”
“She’s my Luna.”

Christy grumbled under her breath, while Aaron, Zane and Sheila made fun of her. Warner simply rolled his eyes, too cool to react.
My gaze swept around the cafeteria, making sure no one was listening to us. I realised a familiar face was missing. He hadn’t attended the two classes we’d taken until now, and he wasn’t here either.
A small, confused frown took over my face. Had something happened?
“Earth to the love of my life,” Zane said, shaking me by the

shoulders.
I laughed, pushing his hands off. “What?”
“What you thinking?”
“Nothing,” I chuckled.
“You were frowning, babe. Tell me the truth.”

I smiled, shaking my head. “I just observed that Blake skipped school today.”
Zane rolled his eyes. “Him again.”
“It was just an observation, Zane,” I sang.
“I know,” he sang back, then made a face.
I laughed again.
“Wasn’t he hurt that day?” Christy asked. “Did he die or something?”
“God, no,” I replied.
“I wish,” Zane muttered. “If life was so fair to me, Lia wouldn’t be his mate at all.”
“So he’s alive?” Christy said.

“Yes,” I replied.
“When did you last see him?”

I pursed my lips. Zane gave me a sarcastic grin. “Tell her, love. When did you see him?”
“Sunday,” I muttered.
“What? Why?” Christy frowned.
“He had books I needed,” I said, trying to keep the details short.
“Ancient scriptures,” Ajax said, returning with a tray full of food.
“Wow, interesting,” Christy said, eyes wide with excitement. “Were they the cursed kind of books or the ancient–bloodline kind?”
“I… I’m not sure,” I muttered.
“Probably both,” Ajax said.
“Yeah, because apparently, I live in a gothic novel now,” I said with a straight face.
Christy hummed like she agreed.
Then her expression shifted a little, more curious than teasing.

“Hey, Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
She hesitated. “Aren’t you seared of him?”

Zane’s fingers tensed on my shoulder. “She doesn’t need to be. I’m always there to protect her.”
“He’s right,” I agreed. “I’m uncomfortable around him. But not particularly scared anymore.”
Christy nodded in understanding. “You should still keep your distance from him.”
“I will. He’s not here anyway.”
“He probably just needed a day off, it’s not like he isn’t coming back,” Zane said.
Christy frowned. “Hm. I don’t know. He showed up that day with wounds. Why wouldn’t he come today?”
She was right. I blinked, lowering my gaze.
Was something wrong?
“I’ll check in with the patrol,” Ajax said, already pulling out his phone.

“Do you have to?” I asked. “I mean, you really think something’s wrong?”
Ajax shrugged. “Wouldn’t hurt to be sure. He’s connected to you, after all. Right, Alpha?”
Zane nodded. “Talk to them. Just confirm if he’s home.”
I glanced at Zane. He met my gaze and gave me a reassuring smile. “Relax. It’s just protocol. I’m sure he’s at home daydreaming about winning you over with his books.”
“Yeah,” I said softly. “Yeah, he’s probably just trying for attention now.”
“Yep.”
The conversation changed after Ajax instructed Zane’s wolves to check out Blake’s house.
But for some reason, I kept waiting for them to call back.
My chest felt tight, like something was wrong, even though I didn’t know what.
