Chapter 144 – Uneasy–2
–LIA’S POV–

Blake took a breath. “For helping Lia behind your back. For the way I handled things.”
I blinked. Okay. That’s new.
Zane just looked at him, expression unreadable. “It’s alright. She asked you to.”
I pursed my lips, feeling slightly guilty again. Zane immediately squeezed my hand in reassurance.
Blake turned to me. “And you… I’m sorry for what happened with my eyes. I know I scared you.”
I shrugged. “It’s fine. I… I know you didn’t mean for that to happen.”
“I didn’t, I swear,” he said quickly.
Everyone around us had gone quiet. Even Christy.
“Also, it was sweet that you guys were worried about me,” Blake continued. “I wasn’t at school the last few days because I went back to my hometown. I wanted to get myself checked out, see if there was something wrong. With the red eyes and everything.”

Zane’s expression didn’t change, but I could feel him tense up a little.
“What did they say?” I asked quietly.
Blake shrugged. “Nothing solid. Just stress, because of…” he trailed off, glancing down at Zane and I’s connected hands. “In any case, it’s gone now. We practiced meditation and self–regulation. I have it under control.”
I slowly nodded. “That’s great. I’m—I’m glad you’re good. Take care.”
He offered a small smile. “Anyway, I’m back now. Sorry for any trouble I might have caused.”
I looked at him for a moment. His voice was steady. His heartbeat too. Everything about him seemed calm.
Maybe a bit too calm.
For some reason, something inside me felt uneasy. A little off.
But I didn’t say anything.
Because Zane was already holding onto me tighter than necessary, and I didn’t want him to start worrying before prom. Not when things were just starting to feel normal.
I had a habit of being paranoid.

“It’s okay,” I said with a nod.

Blake smiled again, then turned around and walked off toward his locker.
Zane exhaled beside me.
The others slowly went back to their conversations. Christy watched me with a look of concern. I gave her a reassuring smile.
My stomach grumbled gently, pulling Zane out of whatever thoughts he was in. He glanced down at me, lips curling into a teasing smirk. “Was that–”
“Yes,” I cut him off. “I’m still human.”
He chuckled.
“I’m gonna go to the washroom real quick,” I said.
“Want me to come with?”
I smiled. “You planning to guard the door?”
“I could join you inside.”
I rolled my eyes. “I’ll be right back. Christy, come with me?”

Zane scowled. “Why does she get to go with you?”
“Because she’s a girl,” Sheila answered for me. “Girls go together. I’m coming too.”
I grinned. “Yay. Let’s go.”

Zane mumbled something as we walked off giggling, but I was still feeling that strange knot in my stomach.
Something didn’t sit right with me.
But there was no way to know what it was.
–ZANE’S POV–
I watched her walk away, disappearing around the corner.
Blake’s voice echoed in my head.
“I just wanted to say I’m sorry.”
Yeah, right.
Something was off..
He wasn’t lying, not exactly. But he wasn’t telling the whole truth either. His heart wasn’t racing. But something about the

way he looked at Lia didn’t sit right with me.

And the hometown thing? The sudden trip to a pack doctor?
I didn’t buy it.
It would be embarrassing for him to keep returning home without his Luna. And then ask his doctor about losing control? That would be shameful for an Alpha.
He was hiding something, and I would find out what it was.
But I couldn’t say anything until I was certain.
Lia had already been through enough. She’d just started sleeping through the night again. She smiled more, she was actually excited for prom. If I told her I didn’t trust Blake, she’d agree with me. But she’d also start worrying.
I couldn’t let that jerk ruin tonight for us.
I pulled out my phone, quickly checking around me.
Everyone was distracted. Aaron and Warner had started arguing about something. Ajax had walked over to the vending machine.
I opened my messages and tapped on Derek’s name.
Find out if Blake left town yesterday. And find out where he went and why.

I pressed send, and then locked my phone and slipped it back into my pocket just as Lia returned.
“Back,” she said, brushing her hair out of her face.
“That was quick for someone whose stomach just growled like a werewolf,” I teased.
She blushed, slapping my arm. “Shut up. It was a false alarm.”
I laughed, ruffling her hair. “Cutie.”
“Mean.”
“Still your date to prom,” I said smugly.
“Absolutely,” she replied.
I smiled, staring at her.
I would make this the most unforgettable night of her life. Even if my mind was now in two different places.
I didn’t know what Blake was up to.
But I’d find out soon enough.
