Chapter 10
Julian looked away, his face relaxing into a smile. “Let me drive you there first.”
Amber felt exhausted, her head throbbing.
But something nagged at her-how did Julian know her company was near Riverside Drive? She couldn’t reinember mentioning it.
Had Blake told him?
The thought made her want to laugh. As if Blake would know-or care-where she worked.
She leaned back to rest and accidentally fell asleep, completely unaware that the car had stopped near a townhouse and remained there for some time.
Two hours later, she awoke to the sound of shuffling papers.
She glanced outside-darkness had completely fallen.
Checking her phone, she saw two missed calls from her grandmother.
Julian, I’m so sorry for falling asleep. Why didn’t you wake me?”
You’re recovering from an injury. Wouldn’t I be heartless to disturb you?” He gestured toward the building. “Go ahead inside. I had the property manager set he passcode to your birthday. It’s a small place, just around 1,100 square feet on a single level. If you don’t take it, I’ll probably sell it in a few years anyway.”
The Westwoods would indeed never consider a single-story townhouse this size worth keeping.
She nodded and opened the car door.
Perhaps it was her imagination, but about 150 yards away, a car seemed to be parked, watching from a distance.
Probably just another resident of the complex.
she entered the gated community, found the right unit, and entered her birthday on the keypad. The door unlocked immediately.
After the Westwoods had unofficially adopted her, Julian had genuinely treated her like a sister, always looking out for her.
She suddenly remembered her small suitcase was still in Zach’s car. She’d need to retrieve it soon.
Zach had given her the day off tomorrow, telling her not to come in.
Perfect timing, considering her headache. After a quick shower, she noticed Julian had texted her.
Had someone prepare a few clothes for you. Nothing fancy, but they’re clean and sanitized. You’ll find them in the master bedroom closet.]
Amber opened the closet door and found several pajama sets and casual outfits. She didn’t know how to properly thank him.
Julian, thank you so much. I owe you dinner sometime.]
When Julian saw this message, he gave a cold laugh and instructed his driver to pull away.
His car passed the luxury vehicle that had been parked on the street-neither acknowledging the other’s existence.
When Blake returned to the mansion, his grandmother immediately rose from the sofa. “Amber didn’t come back with you? She’s not answering her phone either. What’s going on? Aren’t you worried at all?”
Blake radiated coldness as he impatiently handed his coat to a waiting housekeeper. “Why do you care where she is?”
“She’s a young woman, and it’s already 10 PM. She’s not home yet, and you, as her husband, aren’t the least bit concerned? Tell me honestly, Blake-don’t you love Amber anymore? You stood before me and swore you’d take care of her for life.”
Chapter 10
That’s ancient history, Grandma. Get some rest.”
“Your”
His grandmother was furious. Watching him head upstairs, she hurried after him. “She’s really not coming back? She doesn’t have many friends in New York, Where could she go this late? Isn’t this her home?”
Blake stopped in his tracks, his expression darkening. “Maybe she’s found another home elsewhere. Grandma, you should go back to the family estate. Your Influence only stretches so far.”
His grandmother was stung by his words. She pointed a finger at his face. “Fine. Don’t come running to me next time you need something.”
Blake remained silent as she walked away. When she was several steps distant, he finally spoke in a hoarse voice, “She wants a divorce.”
