Chapter 24
Everyone in the room exchanged shocked glances. Had Amber completely lost her mind?
Amber turned to head upstairs when she spotted Blake standing at the staircase, a cigarette between his fingers. No telling how long he’d been there.
She ignored him and went straight to the master bedroom. For the past three years, she’d slept alone in this room, and her computer was kept here as well.
The moment she disappeared upstairs, Marcus snapped out of his shock downstairs.
“Amber, I swear to fucking GOD I’ll kill you!” he shouted, storming toward the stairs until he saw Blake.
Blake casually flicked ash from his cigarette. Marcus’s rage instantly deflated, though he still ground out through clenched teeth, “Blake, did you see what she just did? She’s absolutely vile!”
Blake’s tone was flat, hovering between mockery and self-deprecation. “She’s taken your shit for years without saying a word. The moment she throws a little shade your way, you lose it? What, you’ve got thinner skin than a woman?”
FUCK!” Marcus nearly fell backward in frustration while everyone else burst into laughter at Blake’s comment.
3lake was known for his razor-sharp tongue-he never pulled punches when roasting people, and everyone was used to his style by now.
While everyone laughed, Victoria’s expression darkened. Because she understood what this meant: Blake wasn’t going to hold Amber accountable.
Amber had slapped her across the face, and Blake was letting it slide.
Victoria’s hand slowly clenched at her side as she casually asked, “Does anyone have a hard-boiled egg?”
This was her way of reminding everyone that her face still bore the mark of Amber’s slap.
The group suddenly remembered.
Amber was completely out of line, coming in and hitting you like that.”
Vicky, I’ll find an egg for you. Sit down-that slap mark looks painful as hell.”
Marcus glanced back at Blake, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “So you’re just going to ignore this?”
Blake stubbed out his cigarette in a nearby ashtray, his eyes gleaming with something between mockery and amusement. “I’ll go slap her back right now.”
With that, he walked toward the master bedroom.
No one knew if he was joking or serious, but Blake definitely entered the bedroom and closed the door behind him.
nside, Amber stood at the desk by the window. After turning on her computer, she was hunched over, frantically searching through files.
she remembered storing the songs in a specific folder, but now they were nowhere to be found.
She checked the recycling bin too, but still nothing.
The two elderly housekeepers who had looked after her wouldn’t have been tech-savvy enough to delete files so thoroughly, even if they had given her material to Victoria.
She heard footsteps behind her, then felt arms wrap around her waist.
She knew it was Blake but ignored him.
To her surprise, he spoke. “Looking for those songs?”
Her entire body tensed as she turned to face him.
Chapter 24
Blake’s expression was casual, almost indifferent. “Victoria said they were collaborations between her and Sophia. So I gave them to her.”
Amber felt like she’d been struck by lightning. Her legs nearly gave out beneath her.
The last traces of color drained from her face as she raised her hand and slapped him hard.
Blake frowned but didn’t dodge.
Amber trembled with rage. Those were HER compositions-she had spent a full two years writing and repeatedly revising them. Every lyric contained memories of their years together. Sometimes, when writing particularly heartbreaking parts, she would even bury her face in her pillow and cry.
“Blake, those were My creations. Did it ever cross your mind to ask before giving away MY work?”
Blake’s brow furrowed, his face turning cold. “YOUR creations? Amber, how many more lies are you going to tell?”
