#Chapter 14 Return to Lone Wolf Estate
Helen POV
After what felt like forever–but was only a few minutes in reality-, Justin and I were cleaned, dressed, and downstairs with my family around the dining room table once more.
“Both your daughters will compete in the Games?” Justin asked, curiously cocking his head to the side as he narrowed his eyes on my father.
I understood why he was hesitant to accept the decision to send both Diana and me to the Wolfen Games. Daughters were as welcome to compete as sons, but there was risk involved in the competition. Wolves had died competing before. If a family entered all their children in the Games, they ran the risk of losing all their heirs.
My status as a tricolor Tiger Lily meant I had never even been considered for entrance to the Wolfen Games before. My sister, Diana, had competed and done well to represent our family while I had not been allowed to so much as observe the events.
Why did Father want to take me to compete now? Did he know he would be exposing my identity to Alpha King Juden?
“Yes,” Father said, “I’ve decided both my daughters will represent my house. The Alpha King asked why I’d never brought Helen before in his official inquiry letter. Apparently he didn’t know I had two daughters.”
All my family laughed as if they’d been told a joke; I was reminded my situation as a mixed coat wolf only brought shame on my family. It was no wonder they had never spoken of me to the Alpha King. I was an embarrassment.
Looking down at the table, I traced the pattern of the wood in the surface while the conversation continued around
- me.
“You aren’t worried the Games will be too much for Helen? Justin asked.
Even my mate worried I would bring shame on him—dying instead of succeeding in the Wolfen Games. I wondered if things wouldn’t be better for everyone if I did die in the attempt to compete. No one could be ashamed if I was gone and Justin could find a more worthy mate for the last Lycan.
“No, Helen is very resourceful for a wolf of her condition. She won’t be the only Tiger Lily competing. We do need to get you both registered today if possible?” Father asked, making the question sound light even if I knew there was no question in his mind at all.
If Father wanted me or Diana to do anything, we did it. He never gave us a real choice.
My father did not keep me in chains, but I had grown up in a house with no freedom the same as Justin. We had a life dedicated to our father’s wishes in common.
Justin surprised me by offering, “I’d be willing to escort your daughters to register at Lone Wolf Estate.”
Trying to catch his eyes, I asked, “Do you think that would be—wise? What if they want you to—?”
I was losing the ability to come up with the words to express myself because I didn’t want to expose Justin as the Alpha King’s heir. My family didn’t need to know who Justin was yet and what would the Alpha King even do if Justin returned to his territory? Would he try to chain him again?
I ached thinking of Justin in chains.
Even if a part of him scared me, I didn’t want him kept like some animal.
“That’s very kind of you,” Father said, smiling a sneaky smile I didn’t trust at all, “You can take my daughters to register while I go pay my respects to the Alpha King. Unless there’s some reason I should wait to see Alpha King

Juden?”
I tried to capture Justin’s gaze, but failed. He stared down my father until Father turned his eyes away.
“No. I’ll be fine taking the girls to register for the Games. I know where they’ll need to present themselves.”
Diana snorted, “I know where to present myself. I won two challenges last Wölfen Games. I was the only Snow White to win two challenges.”
Her boasting usually upset me. This time I was too worried about what might happen to Justin upon returning to his father’s estate. If my father knew he was the last Lycan, then he would run immediately to Alpha King Juden to tell him Justin was back.
I needed Justin to look at me! I needed to warn him!
Justin must have recognized I was getting upset because he moved a hand over to lay on top of mine. The weight of his hand alone was impossible to ignore. He was immense compared to all the rest of us. I started to breathe easier as I realized he had escaped.
How would the Alpha King possibly imprison him again?
“We’re going with the rest of the registrants, aren’t we?” Diana asked, sounding annoyed.
I knew many of the other females who would compete were her friends. She’d want the chance to show off for
them. Registration might give her the opportunity to impress more than the she–wolves, too, though her mating to Scott was new enough I couldn’t see how she would be bored of him already.
“Yes You’ll go with the rest of Fiery Cross,” Father agreed, ‘They have a shuttle in the town square we’ll take.”
At that, everything was decided: whatever Father said we would do was what we would do.
None of us argued with Father when his mind was made up
Justin and I shared a bench on the shuttle while Diana sat with Scott.
Father rode alone which was his right based on his age and his status as head of our household. He kept an eye on Justin the whole trip to Lone Wolf Estate. I was on edge by the time we arrived with no idea why. What did my Father know?
Everyone got off the shuttle bus together and formed into a queue outside the gates of the Alpha King’s estate. Two guards were at the gate entrance taking attendance or checking in registrants. I couldn’t tell as I was too far away as well as having never been to the event before.
One of Diana’s friends said, “Why did you bring her?”
“Is she going to be your maid?” asked another of the girls there to register, “I should have brought a maid. Last Games I had to change my own gear between challenges and it was a nightmare!”
“No,” Diana said, “Father is having her compete this Games. He says the Alpha King wants to see both his daughters. Who knows why?”
They laughed as my face grew hot with embarrassment.
Most of the male competitors had already registered from what I could tell. There were wolves of all sizes chatting on the other side of the gate. I strained my eyes and ears trying to pick up on their pack allegiances, colors, and conversations, but I just gave myself a headache.
Wolves were careful when they gathered. We all knew our senses were enhanced.

By the time it was our turn to register, I had learned the guards‘ questions by heart.
Diana went first which was fitting as she’d been there to before and was older.
“Name and pack allegiance,” asked the guard in a voice which was only mildly interested.
“Diana of Fiery Cross Pack, daughter of Alpha Brogan and Luna Bridget,” my sister said proudly, obviously pleased the guard was paying attention to her at all.
“You won the agility challenge and the moving prey challerige last Wolfen Games, didn’t you?” the other guard asked, stepping forward to capture my sister’s attention.
I tuned out my sister’s bragging until the guards both asked my name and pack allegiance together.
Blushing, I murmured, “Helen of Fiery Cross Pack. I’m also daughter of Alpha Brogan and Luna Bridget. These are my first Games.”
“We can tell,” the second guard muttered, rolling his eyes.
“What’s your coat?” the main guard asked, ready to take my answer down on his list.
“I’m a Tiger Lily. A tricolor with white, brown, and grey fur” I said, hands trembling at my sides while I waited on their response.
I hadn’t heard another Tiger Lily register for the Games while I was in line.
Both guards laughed before the second one asked me again “You’re joking, right? Your family sent a Tiger Lily to the Wolfen Games with their Snow White?”
My hands trembled even more and I could feel tears prickling at my eyes. I didn’t want to appear weak in front of all the people there, but it was humiliating to be called out as inferior in such a public way.
“Who even sponsors you?” the first guard asked.
Stepping around me, Justin loomed over both guards as he let his Alpha aura spread out around him. Everyone could sense the depth of his power within moments.
His deep voice resonated through the crowd as he stated, “I sponsor Helen of Fiery Cross.”
