Chapter 7
I stood there, stunned for a moment, suddenly realizing why Alden’s face looked so familiar.
He smiled and pulled a necklace from around his neck.
Memories came rushing back, and I stared at Alden in shock.
When I was six, my parents took me to the Tavin’s residence for Alden’s grandfather’s birthday.
I couldn’t sit still and slipped out to play in the backyard.
I hadn’t gone far when I heard someone quietly sobbing.
A little boy was clinging to a tree, tears streaming down his face, clutching a kite in his hand.
I’d always been bold, so I wanted to climb up and help him, but my arms and legs were too short to reach.
I don’t know where I got the confidence back then, but I patted my chest and told him to jump, swearing I’d catch
him.
The boy actually believed me and let go.
Of course, I couldn’t catch him.
Thankfully, the tree wasn’t tall, so he wasn’t hurt.
But he cried even harder.
I panicked, terrified my parents would scold me, so I quickly covered his mouth and begged him not to cry.
Then I took off the necklace I’d made myself and gave it to him, claiming it was a family heirloom.
I even promised that when I grew up, I’d marry him and buy back the “heirloom.”
“It was you?”
I couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time.
All these years, he’d actually kept that childhood trinket and worn it so carefully.
“Yeah, I was afraid you wouldn’t recognize me and would end up marrying someone else,” Alden said seriously, and my heart softened.
The air between us grew warm and charged. Alden took my hand, his voice low and full of feeling, “You almost mar- ried someone else.”
My cheeks burned, but I forced a joke. “It was supposed to be Sierra who got engaged, you know.”

Alden paused, then smiled. “Edith, it’s true that our families joined forces for business.”
He cupped the back of my head, his voice husky. “But the only reason I’m here is because the bride is you.”
Alden and I fit together surprisingly well.
Meanwhile, Dario was relentless. Nearly every day, he waited for me outside the Tavin’s residence, trying to talk to me whenever he got the chance.
But his time ran out quickly.
His company was soon exposed for tax evasion, and the authorities launched a swift investigation.
That was Alden’s doing.
The king of jealousy.
I didn’t see Dario again until three months later.
The Orlan Group had already gone bankrupt.
I heard he’d pulled every string he could and poured in a fortune, but nothing could save it.
I was out shopping when I heard Dario’s surprised voice behind me, “Edith!”
He had dark circles under his eyes and looked completely worn down.
Miley stood beside him, glaring at me with pure hatred.
Dario hurried toward me, about to say something, but his gaze dropped to my belly.
His voice shook uncontrollably. “Edith… are you pregnant?”
I admitted it without hesitation.
Miley’s eyes burned with even more hatred, her hand unconsciously covering her own flat stomach.
I’d heard bits and pieces about what happened to her.
The day of my wedding, she’d gone home and clung to Dario, begging him to marry her.
But Dario was too busy trying to win me back to pay her any attention.
They ended up in a huge fight.
In the struggle, Miley accidentally hit the corner of a table and started bleeding heavily.
She lost the baby.
“Edith, do you have any idea what my life has been like since you left me?” Dario’s voice was tight with emotion, his eyes filled with longing.
“Please, forgive me, Come back to me. I can’t live without you.”

He pleaded desperately.
I looked at Dario calmly, my heart completely unmoved.
All those old feelings had long since faded away.
I rested my hand on my belly, smiling gently. “Dario, I’m really happy now.”
The light in his eyes went out in an instant.
“It’s over between us, Dario. Please, don’t look for me again.”
I didn’t spare him another glance, ignoring the choked sobs behind me as I strolled toward the mall exit.
Alden texted to say he was coming to pick me up and had a surprise waiting at home.
I couldn’t help but smile as I stood by the curb, replying to his message.
Suddenly, screams erupted from the crowd, followed by a deafening roar.
I looked up in terror to see a huge truck barreling straight toward me.
Miley was behind the wheel, her hair wild, eyes blazing with hatred so intense it was almost tangible.
“Edith, you deserve to die! Why is it always you in their eyes?
“Why did I lose my baby, and you get to have one? I want you dead!”
