A flight ticket back from Canada.
The surprise left me speechless. It was a long time before I finally found the courage to call Seth.
But it was Fiora who picked up.
“Elaine, Seth’s passed out-dead tired. If you need anything, you can tell me.”
Dead tired?
I let out a bitter laugh. “Could you do me a favor and tell Seth that we’re over? I won’t be bothering him anymore.”
Fiora snorted. “Elaine, Seth, and I have just been close since we were kids, like siblings. Don’t get so jealous.
“And anyway, he never really cared about you. Whether you break up or not, it’s all the same to him.”
On the other end, Seth seemed to stir and make some noise.
Fiora relayed my message. Seth paused for a second, then scoffed without a care.
“Fine, break up. Finally, I’m free of you-you’re like a piece of gum stuck to my shoe.
“Just don’t come crawling back to me like before, begging me to take you back. And make sure all your junk is gone before I get home!”

Seth hung up, a restless anger simmering beneath his words. He thought my tricks were getting more and more pa- thetic.
“So what if I’m traveling with Fiora? She agreed to everything to my face, and now she thinks breaking up will get a reaction out of me? Ridiculous,” Seth thought to himself.
He figured that pathetic, groveling version of me would come crawling back within a week, just like always.
But I didn’t care. I couldn’t wait to pack up my things.
A little while later, the doorbell rang. It was one of Seth’s friends-the loudest of them all, the one who used to pres- sure me to strip at parties.
“Seth told me to keep an eye on you. If you’re breaking up, make it quick. Don’t pretend you can’t carry your stuff, and don’t come up with excuses to come back later.”
I pressed my lips together. “I won’t. Tell him not to worry.”
I kept packing, but suddenly Seth’s friend put his hand over mine.
“Elaine, why don’t you come with me? I’m not as heartless as Seth.”

His leering tone made my skin crawl.
I instinctively tried to run. “Don’t even think about it. I was still Seth’s girlfriend-if you try anything, I won’t hold
back!
“And if you go after your friend’s girlfriend, Seth won’t let
you
off casy!”
But the moment I turned, he grabbed my clothes and slapped me hard across the face, sending me crashing to the
floor.
Pain shot through my knees as I hit the ground, convinced something had broken.
He pinned me down, and I struggled desperately, terrified.
“You think Seth gives a damn, about you? He and I have been friends forever-he knows exactly what kind of guy I
“It’s late, and he sent me over here. What do you think that means?”
He started tearing at my clothes.
I’d known Seth was a jerk, but I never thought he’d stoop this low-completely heartless, utterly vile.
I screamed and sobbed in despair, but no one came to help.
To shut me up, the man slapped me again and again.
I was on the verge of passing out.
Just as my clothes were about to be ripped away, there was a violent pounding at the door.
In that moment, hope flickered in my chest. While he was distracted, I summoned every ounce of strength to shove him off and stumbled toward the door.
When I saw who was standing there, my legs gave out.
I collapsed into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably. “You finally came back.”
