Seth spent two weeks out having fun with Fiora.
But underneath it all, he was uneasy. He couldn’t believe I was actually keeping my distance this time, two weeks and not a single call or message.
In the past, whenever he said we should break up, I’d be so anxious I couldn’t sleep.
Within five days, I’d always find some way to beg him to take me back.
”
I was the one who had pursued him initially. Seth had enjoyed it at first, flattered that someone could be so deeply in- fatuated with him.
He thought I was obedient and so in love with him that, at the very beginning, he genuinely considered settling down for a serious relationship.
But he always believed he was in love with Fiora. She, on the other hand, loved her freedom and refused to be tied down.
Seth got used to waiting around for her, and in the meantime, he played the field, unable to rein himself in.
After all, no matter how badly he treated me, I never left.
He figured this time would be no different.
But after two weeks, even Seth started to feel uneasy. He couldn’t enjoy himself anymore. Ignoring Fiora’s protests, he headed back to New York.
When he saw that my suitcase was still there, he breathed a sigh of relief. Smug, he thought, “I knew she couldn’t
leave me.”
But he waited all day and all night, and I never came back.
He decided to throw me a bone. So, for the first time ever, he called me.
All he got was a cold, mechanical busy signal.
It hit him-he’d been blocked.
Not willing to believe it, he called again and again, but every time, the same cold, mechanical tone.
Furious, Seth hurled his phone at the floor. “Goddammit, Elaine, are you screwing with me?”
He kept thinking about how he’d teach me a lesson when I finally came crawling back.
But just then, the doorbell rang. A delivery guy handed him an envelope.

Seth opened it, and inside was an acknowledgment slip from the police department, addressed to him because they
couldn’t reach me.
He stared at the words, feeling like he’d fallen into an ice bath.
Attempted assault…
And the other name listed was one of his friends.
All the color drained from Seth’s face.
He lost it, storming over to his friend’s place and beating him like a man possessed.
“Why did you do it?
“How dare you? How dare you touch my girl!”
His friend fought back, landing a punch that left Seth’s eye black and blue.
“Quit pretending, Seth. Weren’t you the one who hinted at it?”
Seth stared at him in disbelief. “When did I ever tell you to hurt her?”
His friend pulled out his phone and showed him their messages. Seth saw his own words.
“I’m done with Elaine.
“You’ve been eyeing her, right? Go keep an eye on her while she packs her stuff. Don’t say I never gave you a shot.”
Sent the night everything happened.
Seth felt his blood freeze. He had never sent those messages.
They didn’t exist on his phone, either.
He remembered how much he’d regretted letting anyone see me take off my jacket that night-he’d never have hinted at something like this.
No matter how annoyed he’d been, in his mind, I was still his. Only he had the right to treat me badly.
His face went ghostly pale. The only person who could’ve touched his phone that night was Fiora.
