Lucian was still shaken by those words.

He covered his face, his shoulders trembling with silent sobs.

“I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry. I can’t believe I pushed you toward a man like that. You must have suffered so much.

“If you want to get back at me, punish me-anything, I’ll take it. I deserve it.”

I pulled his hands away and kissed the tears from his eyes.

“It’s okay. None of it matters. As long as you love me, nothing else matters.”

I realized my love for Lucian was completely unconditional, even if it all began with his foolish bet.

I endured two years of misery by Seth’s side.

But it doesn’t matter anymore. In this life, the only person who’s ever truly cared for me, spoiled me, and cherished me is Lucian.

As long as he’s with me, nothing else matters.

But Lucian was still drowning in guilt, unable to forgive himself.

He believed he was the cause of my suffering, and beyond desperately trying to make it up to me, he had no idea how

to atone.

He called in a lawyer and had 80% of his assets transferred to my name.

Even so, at night, he was still plagued by nightmares.

When I woke up in the middle of the night, I’d hear him crying out, “Elaine, I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!”

It made my heart ache, too.

Then one day, I got a call from Lucian’s mother.

“Elaine, I know Lucian has wronged you in the past. I’m calling to ask you not to blame him. His health isn’t good. For my sake, please be patient with him. He just had surgery, and he insisted on coming back home before he was even fully recovered.”

Lucian’s mother went on and on, her voice full of concern.

I held my phone tightly, my mind going blank as her words crashed over me.

She told me Lucian once had a brain tumor, something so rare she couldn’t even pronounce its name.

Chapter 9 The Kiss

It couldn’t be treated here; his life was left to fate.

He made that bet with me because he wanted me to hate him, to stop loving him.

“But who would have thought a good kid like you would be so rebellious and actually go through with it?

“I know you’ve been hurt, but Lucian hasn’t had it easy either. That tumor nearly killed him several times, and the only thing that kept him going was thinking of you.

“He’d only been out of surgery a few months when he insisted on coming back. I know he did it for you. He’s still not fully recovered. For my sake, please don’t blame him-take care of him, will you?”

By the time I hung up, my face was soaked with tears.

I bit Lucian’s lips in a rush of anger.

“You madman, you fool, I hate you, I despise you.

“I love you,” I said inwardly.

Lucian woke from my bite, a little dazed and confused.

But I didn’t break the kiss. “Lucian, even if you’re going to die someday, you’d better die right here by my side.”

Lucian understood what I meant, and our tears mingled together.

But neither of us could bear to let go of that kiss.
