Seth felt like he was trapped in a nightmare.
In it, I actually told him I didn’t love him. But he loved me so much-how could that be real?
To keep himself from having nightmares like this, Seth drowned himself in bottle after bottle of whiskey.
“Why?
“Why?
“Why doesn’t she love me?
“Why did she play with me, only to go love someone else? Why is it someone else she loves?” he kept thinking.
Seth lost control and smashed a bottle on the floor, then laughed bitterly and drank straight from another.
He drank so much that his stomach started bleeding.
When he came to, he grabbed a stranger’s phone and sent me a text, “I’m in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer. I’m dy- ing.”
But I ignored him, blocking this new number too.
Seth truly thought he was going to die. Back then, whenever he got hurt, I would panic and fuss over him, wishing I could take his pain for myself.
So why was it that now, he was the only one who couldn’t let go?
Seth ripped out all his IVs and refused any more treatment.
He wondered, if he really was dying, would I come see him?
But I never showed up-not even once.
In business, he went head-to-head with Lucian.
Lucian was out for revenge on my behalf, coming after Seth from every angle.
Seth was already at his breaking point, but he stubbornly refused to give in.
“Give it back. Give it all back to me.
“Give Elaine back to me!”
But in the end, he lost. His company barely
money, no leverage against Lucian.

Chapter 10 The Ending
Seth completely lost himself in the haze of alcohol, day and night blending together.
When he was drunk, he could almost see me-still there by his side, still loving him, as vivid as ever.
One afternoon, drunk and desperate, Seth suddenly wanted to see me again.
He staggered out the door, wandering aimlessly, until he stumbled into a jewelry store.
That’s where he saw me and Lucian.
We were picking out rings. When I slipped one on my finger, Lucian leaned down and kissed my hand.
Tears streamed down Seth’s face, and all the strength left his body.

He turned and walked out, but his mind was foggy from the alcohol. Crossing the street, he didn’t see the car speeding toward him.
There was a loud crash, and Seth was thrown to the pavement.
Everything went black. And then, out of the darkness, he saw a memory-me, blushing and shy, standing in front of him and confessing my feelings.
“Seth, I really love you.”
This time, he didn’t scoff and ask, “Who are you?”
Instead, he took my
hand.
“Elaine, I really love you, too.”
But, in the end, it was all just a dream.
