Chapter 19
Heather’s expression turned awkward when she realized that Beverly had overheard her badmouthing Elaine. However, as the matriarch of the Gray family, she wouldn’t let anyone interfere in a matter that she’d already decided on.
“Bev, this has nothing to do with you. I know you’re not feeling well, so you should head back to your room to rest.” Her expression softened as she looked at Beverly.
Beverly ignored her and looked at Christina, waiting for her to decide.
Sensing the iciness in Beverly’s attitude, Heather had no choice but to give in for the time being. When she turned to meet Christina’s stubborn gaze, she said impatiently, “Don’t bother Bev with this, and don’t you dare bring this up with your brother.
“I’ll handle the situation for you. I’ll make Lance end things with that woman. If you don’t want to raise the child as your own, I’ll tell him to get rid of them too. You’re not allowed to bring up a divorce anymore.”
Heather’s perfunctory, condescending tone upset Christina further. Her eyes were red-rimmed as she said, “Mom, I’m your daughter, not a decorative piece you’ve planted in the York residence to hold territory! I have the right to decide how I want to live my life. I want a divorce!”
“Do that, and I’ll disown you. Don’t even think about coming back to the Gray family and being our heiress. Our family will not have a woman who has been cast aside!” Heather snapped harshly, angered by Christina’s words.
Christina had never imagined something like this would happen to her. She’d been rejected by both her husband’s family and her own!
Tears streamed down her face, but she remained steadfast in her decision. “Fine! I’ll stop being your daughter from this day forth, and Theresa won’t be your granddaughter. We don’t need you to meddle in our lives; I’ll leave with her right now. But know this-I’ll definitely divorce Lance, no matter the price!”
Beverly knew exactly how Christina felt. She, too, had experienced the agony of being betrayed by her husband. She held Christina’s hand while looking at Heather coldly. Then, she said, “Come with me, Christina. I’m not staying in this family
anymore either.”
That startled Heather. She wanted to stop Beverly when a pained howl suddenly came from outside. Then, they heard Theresa crying at the top of her lungs. All three of them sprang to action and hurried to the drawing room.
Theresa and Harold stood at the door, looking ashen. When they saw the three women, Theresa threw herself into Christina’s arms and cried, “Mommy, tell Uncle Evan to stop hitting Daddy! Look at how badly Daddy is bleeding!”
Christina covered her eyes as she looked at Lance. He was being beaten up by two bodyguards. Their punches landed squarely on his face, which was already swollen, bruised, and battered. He was a bloody mess.
When Beverly saw how stunned Christina was, she had a maid take the children away.
“C-Christina, save me…” Lance pleaded.
Evan sat across from him and the bodyguards, his eyes cold and emotionless. The menacing pressure he exuded was so strong that no one dared look him in the eye.
He asked coolly, “What right do you have to utter my sister’s name?”
As soon as he said that, the bodyguards punched Lance harder, making the latter howl in pain.
Heather hurried forward to stop the debacle. “Evan, he’ll die if you keep this up. The Yorks are one of Clouron’s most prestigious families, and we need to rely on them to keep our businesses there going. Teaching him a lesson is enough.”
“Let me go, Evan, or my father will come after you!” At Heather’s words, Lance thought that the Gray family couldn’t survive without him. His attitude became obnoxious as he snarled, “So what if I have a mistress? It’s perfectly fine for men to play

around while socializing! You have one, too, don’t you? Drop the act!”
Beverly let go of Christina’s hand when she heard that. If even Lance, who lived in Clouron, knew about Evan’s affair with Cindy, what about Christina? Was she also aware? Did she help them lie to her too?
Her blood ran cold.
While Beverly was dazed, Christina stormed forward and slapped Lance hard across the face. “It’s bad enough that you did something so despicable. How dare you try to drag my brother down with you?”
