Chapter 54 My Mother Was the Victim
This short sentence almost made my strong exterior crumble in an instant.
I instinctively wanted to agree with him, but soon, I snapped back to reality.
I pretended to be confused and asked, “Mr. Hodge, are you asking me to persuade her? I can try, but I can’t guarantee she’ll listen to me.”
After I said this, Philip’s gaze became deeply focused, and he stared at me for a long while without speaking.
I blinked slightly and asked with a hint of confusion, “What is it? Mr. Hodge, did I say something wrong?”
Philip smiled faintly and lazily shifted his gaze away, his interest in me clearly diminishing.
I knew then that my performance might have fooled him.
He leaned back in his chair, his expression growing a bit cold. “Forget it. A plaything like her isn’t the only one
I have. Now that I’m thinking about it, she could be a bit boring. She won’t please me, so there’s no need to try
persuading her.”
I lowered my head and put on an impeccable smile. “I see. Mr. Hodge is right. If something can’t please you,
it’s better to be rid of it.”
Philip gave a faint “um–hum” and then turned to the main topic. “You said you needed something from me?
Go ahead, tell me what it is.”
I quickly put on a worried expression. “Yes, Mr. Hodge. My mother is very ill. I’ve gone to several hospitals, but
none of them have been able to find a way to treat her. I really have no other option, so I’ve come to seek your
help.”
Philip seemed a bit uninterested. “My family is in the pharmaceutical business. You should go to someone
else if you need treatment.”
I sighed lightly. “Mr. Hodge, maybe I do need medicine. All the doctors say my mother’s condition is caused by
a problem in her nervous system. She almost can’t stay conscious every day… Mr. Hodge, do you have any
drugs for treating nervous system diseases? I can pay any price!”
My tone was urgent and desperate. After I finished speaking, I fixed my gaze on Philip.
I dared not miss any subtle changes in his expression, as I was eager to confirm my suspicion.
As expected, Philip’s brows slightly furrowed, and the indifference in his demeanor reignited. He looked at me
with a slight smile. “So… you’re talking about diseases related to the nervous system?”
I nodded eagerly. “Yes, all the doctors said that. I truly don’t know what else to do, so I had to come to you. If you have any drugs that might work… I’ll do anything!”
My urgency was real, not just an act. In fact, I was genuinely worried about my mother’s condition, but more
importantly, I wanted to confirm whether my mother’s illness had anything to do with Philip.
Philip smiled and said, “This disease is quite interesting. It’s puzzling that so many experts are at a loss. It
really piques my curiosity. Aurora, if you don’t mind, would you let me take a look at your mother?”
Upon hearing this, I felt more confident. It pretty much confirmed my suspicion that my mother’s illness was

related to them!
At that moment, the suppressed anger surged once again.
I took a deep breath and forced myself to stay calm.
I couldn’t let Philip see my mother.
It wasn’t because I was worried he might recognize her–after all, when I met my mother again, even I almost didn’t recognize her.
She had undergone plastic surgery.
According to my mother, it wasn’t something she did voluntarily. She felt she had gone through a period of
confusion. When she woke up again, she was already lying on the operating table, with a sharp scalpel cutting into her skin.
That was the only memory she had of that entire year. When she fully regained consciousness, she had
already returned to this city.
Her memories from that period were completely erased.
Just like those women who had once been in relationships with Philip and then disappeared. When they
returned to their lives, they could hardly remember what happened during their time together.
When others asked about it, they couldn’t explain.
However, no one cared about these things. Neither their families nor friends ever considered that they might
actually have forgotten. They just assumed those women didn’t want to bring it up.
As time passed, no one mentioned it again, and those people gradually overlooked the blanks in their
memories.
That was why I was so certain.
My mother was a victim of Philip’s experiment!
Seeing that I hadn’t spoken for a while, Philip’s interest seemed to grow. “Is it inconvenient for me to see her? Aurora, your attitude doesn’t seem sincere. How can I know if the medicine will be effective if I don’t see the
patient?”
I snapped out of my thoughts and looked up at Philip, giving him a bitter smile. “Mr. Hodge, to be honest, it is a bit inconvenient. Since my mother fell ill, her emotions have been very unstable, and she could snap at any moment. If you go, it might provoke her. The doctors say her body can’t bear any more stress… After all, besides her nervous system disease, she also has severe heart disease.”
Upon hearing this, a flicker of smugness appeared in Philip’s eyes.
My heart sank–his actions had definitely caused my mother’s illness!
But…
Why didn’t I find any women who had symptoms similar to my mother’s when I investigated those who had
broken up with him?
No…
Suddenly, I realized something, and my breath quickened. There were indeed similarities, but they weren’t

exactly the same!
Some people only had issues with their nervous system, while others only had heart disease. Due to individual differences, I hadn’t been able to connect these symptoms to Philip’s experiments!
But now, thinking about it, how could there be such a coincidence?
It was all Philip’s doing!
In order to avoid suspicion that everyone was falling ill with the same disease, he made sure no one got all
the symptoms.
At this thought, I couldn’t help but break out in a cold sweat. Perhaps, Philip’s schemes were even more
complicated than I had imagined!
