Chapter 15
Hearing Irene was in an accident was like a wake–up call, and without asking questions, I asked Michael to take me to her.
Everything happened so fast that next we were now driving to the hospital, and I was asking Noah to speed up.
I was so confused about how it happened. I mean, when I left Irene there, I didn’t really think, but in the state she was in, anything could happen. Well, this was my fault. Michael kept asking me to calm down, that she was going to be fine, but I didn’t listen. I just kept blaming myself for her condition.
“If she dies, I’m responsible.” I kept repeating, ignoring Michael’s comforting words.
It didn’t take long to get to the hospital; I quickly got out as soon as the car parked, and leaving Michael behind, I rushed in and headed straight to the receptionist, but luckily, before I could act stupid, Poppy came to me and pulled me from the receptionist.
“Where is she? What are they saying?”
“Calm down, Logan.”
“Don’t ask me to calm down. How’s Irene? How did she get here? What happened to her?” I asked all at once, and Poppy didn’t seem to know which one to answer first. “I want to know the person behind this, find the place it happened, check if they have cameras, and find the bastard behind it,” I said to Noah, who nodded as he came in with Michael, who rushed to
his wife.
I then turned back to Poppy, intending to ask more questions, when I heard her confess to Michael that she was the one who ran her over.
“She ran in front of me. I don’t know why, but it was too late for me to stop the car,” she said, while Michael rubbed her back, telling her it was okay.
I scratched the back of my hair as I realized it wasn’t the person who bumped her at fault; Irene was at fault. Actually, I was because I left her there, so she was too upset; perhaps she was thinking of ending her life.
“Shit.” I cursed under my breath before I calmed myself and then asked if the doctors said anything.
“No one spoke to me,” she answered, and I nodded before dismissing Noah, who seemed to be waiting for my instruction. I mean, since we found the person who did it, there was no need for him to go out searching for evidence anymore.
I walked to the bench and sat down while Michael calmed his wife, who seemed panicked; she kept repeating that she might have killed her, that she was a murderer.
“But I swear I didn’t see her; it was an accident. I was sent to get Mom’s cards and was going to park; there was no one there, and just as I turned, she appeared in front of me, and it was… it was too late to stop; I just bumped into her and… I…”
“Babe, it’s okay; it was an accident.”
“I should have stopped the car, I should have tried harder, I—”
“You did your best, okay, let’s hope the doctors save her, okay?” Michael kept calming his wife while I sat in silence calming myself and praying that they saved her.
She was very excited to marry me. I mean, we’ve both waited for years. I don’t even know what came over me, why I was upset that Patricia was gone when I’ve lived years hoping for Irene’s return. Now she was finally back, and no one was in our way, and I was here, taking it for granted.

Chapter 15
I then swore to make it right, to marry Irene as soon as she gets well.
1 kept running my hands into my hair as I was getting restless; we had been here for over an hour now. I couldn’t wait any longer, so 1 stood up, but before I could go to the receptionist, a man called my name, and by his voice, I quickly recognized him as Jack.
“Jack?”
“Logan.” He brought out his hand for a handshake, and I took it before taking him for a manly hug, clapping his back. “I heard about your fiancé; it’s all over the news.”
“W–what?”
“Yes, I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay.” I said and then turned to Noah, who said he was on it; it’s like he read my mind: “Shut down all the blogs that posted it.” I couldn’t afford a scandal now, not when Patricia’s story was the trending topic at the moment. Yes, I don’t know who leaked it, but Patricia and I were trending for our recent divorce. Many made up possible reasons why we got divorced, and if you’re wondering why I didn’t shut it down, well, deep down I hoped Patricia would come across it, and I don’t know, maybe come back?
It was not important, but all I knew was that the news trending had a chance of her calling me and possibly asking me to shut it down, and now I didn’t want Irene’s accident to overshadow it. That’s why I wanted Noah to shut it down. Call me crazy, but it’s like I cared more about Patricia’s return than Irene’s health. Did this even make sense?
“She’s a strong young woman; she will fight this,” Jack said. I nodded and then thanked him for coming. Jack was my uncle and the only family I had, well, except for my aunt–Jack’s wife, who was like a mother to me since my parents died in that accident.
“She is,” I said, although not confident, I didn’t want her to die; I wouldn’t live with myself if she did.
Finally, the doctor came, which made me stand on my feet.
Michael and Poppy also turned to the doctor, with Jack behind me, all curious to hear what the doctor had to say.
“Mr. Miller?” he asked, and I nodded my head. “Ms. Flores told me about you; you’re her fiancé, right?”
“Yes, he is. How is she, doctor? What’s her condition?” Jack asked, and I nodded my head again, afraid of his response.
“We saved her; she’s perfectly fine.” He said, making all of us sigh in relief, “Her leg might hurt a little, but she is saved, but the baby-”
“What baby?”
“I’m so sorry, Mr. Miller, we couldn’t save your baby.”
