Chapter 171 – Witch
–ZANE’S POV–
12 min left
My chest felt tight as we made our way back to the pack house.
There was a silence in the car, none of us speaking.
Ajax was chill, I knew, but Warner’s face was hard. He avoided meeting my gaze, almost like he was afraid I’d read his thoughts if we did.
As if he didn’t want me to know what was on his mind.
I didn’t blame him. I knew why he was behaving this way.
We entered the pack house, and almost immediately, he turned to me. “I’m gonna get to bed. See you guys tomorrow.” He stepped towards the stairs, but I stopped him.
“Wait.”
He froze, his back tensing.
“Get Aaron and Sheila and meet me in the lounge.”
A meeting was necessary. I had to discuss this with the Hounds, tell them exactly what happened in the forest.

Ajax and I waited for the others, sprawled casually on the sofa. He glanced at me from time to time, but didn’t say anything.
“What?” I asked after the fourth time he looked at me.
“Nothing. I’m just wondering why you called a meeting. Is it to gloat about how cool your Luna is?”
I sighed. “I wish it was that.”
Now he frowned, sitting up straighter. “Then? What’s wrong?”
“Let the others come.”
As though on cue, Aaron and Sheila entered the room, hair messy and eyes full of sleep.
“This better be important,” Sheila muttered, scowling as she took a seat beside Ajax.
Aaron settled beside me.
“Where’s Warner?”
“Coming.”
A few minutes later, he joined us too, standing before us like he was about to give a speech.

“Finally,” Ajax said. “What’s up, Zane?”
I stared at Warner, who still wouldn’t look at me.
“Warner,” I said, “what’s on your mind?”
He met my gaze, eyes slightly wide. “What?”
“What are you thinking?”
He stared at me quietly, while Ajax. Aaron and Sheila exchanged confused glances.
Then, he spoke. “You shouldn’t have done that,” he said softly. “It feels like a waste of time, Zane. We woke up in the middle of the night to go train her. What was the point?”
“What do you mean? You saw the point,” Ajax said.
“He let her win, Ajax,” Warner said. “Did you not see what happened? She asked him to let go and he listened. I mean, I get she’s his mate and his whole world, but we are doing this for her protection. The Order won’t be so nice to her.”
“Actually,” I said, standing up. “I have a feeling they will.”
Warner narrowed his eyes. “Really, Zane?”
“Yes,” I nodded, walking up to him. “Because I didn’t let go because she’s my mate and I love her. I let go because I didn’t

have a choice.”

Warner’s face fell, and he blinked at me a couple of times. I turned to the others. They looked lost.
“We were training,” I began explaining, “Lia and I. I trapped her arms a few times, and at one point, she got tired. She asked me to let go, and I didn’t. So she got annoyed and snapped at me. Instantly, my arms dropped to my sides as if she’d burned me. Almost as if… they weren’t controlled by me. But by her command.”
Aaron and Sheila glanced at each other, then at me. Ajax stared. “You’re kidding, right?” he asked.
“I wish,” I said, before turning to Warner. “I didn’t let her do anything, Warner. She defeated me fair and square.”
“But that isn’t fair and square,” Aaron said, standing up as well. “That’s messed up, Zane.”
“Is that because she’s a goddess?” Sheila asked. “She can control our actions if she wants? Does it work only on you because you’re her mate or on anyone?”
“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “It’s the first time it happened.”
“This is dangerous, Zane,” Aaron said. “She could make you do anything she wants.”

I shrugged. “She can do that without mind control.”

He clicked his tongue. “This is different, dude. You’re the Alpha of a pack. You need to have a mind of your own. A war ist coming, and–”
“And we’re not prepared,” I cut in. “The Order caused a lot of damage in a single attack the previous time. We are still healing. There are permanent scars on Sheila and Warner’s bodies. We’re werewolves, Aaron, we don’t do scars.”
“You think I don’t know that?” he snapped, stepping closer to me. His eyes blazed with defiance. This was the first time he’d challenged me like that. “That’s my mate you’re talking about. That’s my body Lia’s other mate wounded.”
Tension filled the room.
He was blaming Lia for what happened.
My jaw ticked.
“That wasn’t her fault,” I said, maintaining composure.
“I know it wasn’t,” he replied, “but you have duty not just to her, but to us as well. I know she’s everything to you, and I know she comes first. Even before your pack. Normally, that’s alright. It’s how it should be, even for an Alpha. But Zane, she’s… something. She’s not human, she’s not even a werewolf. She is becoming a danger to all of us. Weird things happen around her,

and I’m afraid that’s gonna affect all of us.”
“Of course it will,” I replied, my eyes black.
Aaron took a step back, face falling.
“She is your Luna. Anything that happens to her will, and should affect all of you.”
Ajax and Sheila stood up now, stepping closer to me.
“Of course, Zane,” Sheila said softly, trying to dilute the situation. “We know that. All Aaron is trying to say, is that Lia needs to learn how to control what she did. If she accidentally starts commanding you or us, it could be very dangerous. She’s just a girl, she doesn’t know how wars are fought or won.”
“Danger is exactly what we need, Sheila,” I replied. “The Order has weapons we don’t even know about. They’re strong. Stronger than we expected. With Lia by our side, she could end this war in a single moment.”
“And we agree,” Warner spoke up now. “Of course it’s an asset, Zane. It’s very useful. But only if she knows how to do it at will. Not like this, not accidentally.”
“How do we train her for that, then?” I asked, my eyes slowly returning back to normal. “None of us know mind control.”
Ajax scratched the back of his neck. “I might know someone.”

I raised a brow at him.
“No,” Warner said. “Not her.”
“Who?” I asked.

“There’s a witch,” he said. “She can do weird things. Maybe she knows something?”
“A witch?” I frowned.
“Yeah.”
“What in the voodoo,” Aaron muttered, visibly uncomfortable.
“No,” Warner said again. “She’s strange and really creepy. Also very dangerous.”
“How do you guys know her?” I asked.
Ajax pursed his lips to hide a smile.
“What are we missing?” Sheila asked, eyes narrowed.
“Warner saved her life years ago,” he laughed. “We were kids. Her too. He thought she was a human, and was about to be crushed under a falling branch. Turns out, she’s a little witch and her cat was stuck in the tree so she caused the falling branch. She’s been in love with him ever since. Sends him little

love notes sometimes.”
We all glanced at Warner in disbelief.
From the way he was glaring at Ajax, it seemed true.

“How come I’m just now finding out about this?” I asked. “Now who’s endangering the pack?”
“She’s harmless,” Ajax laughed. “Mostly. She caused Warner to wet his bed once because he didn’t respond to her magic love
note.”
“You’re done,” Warner growled, charging towards him.
Ajax yelped and backed off, but I grabbed Warner by the back of his neck before he’d reach him.
“Easy there, witch boyfriend,” I said, frowning. “Contact her. We need her.”
“No, we don’t,” he said. “She’s creepy, Zane. It’s something coming from me.”
“I agree,” Sheila jumped in. “If Warner is saying she’s creepy, I don’t think I wanna meet her.”
“You don’t have to. None of you do. Warner and I will pay her a visit.”

“We’re werewolves, Ajax. Not little kids she’ll fatten up and try to

A smirk took over Aaron’s face. “She could try to eat Warner.”
Warner growled, and we all laughed. “Stop teasing him,” I chuckled. “Save it for after the war.”
He glanced at me. “Wow. Thanks, Zane.”
“No problem. Contact her.”
“Fine,” he muttered, now pushing my hand off his neck. “But you guys won’t tell another soul about this. The pack won’t respect their warrior wolf if they find out. Is that clear?” he ordered.
“Deal,” I said with a nod. “We also don’t tell Lia about any of this yet. Alright?”
“Not even about her new ability?”
“No,” I stated. “Not until we’ve figured out how to use it.‘
“Okay.”
“Fair.”
