Chapter 24 – Sick–1
–LIA’S POV–
I couldn’t sleep that night. Or eat. Or relax at all.

It didn’t matter how much Zane and Blake both had tried to reassure me. The point was that they were werewolves, and both of them wanted something to do with me. Their rivalry for each other meant that they belonged to different packs.
I’d spent the day researching wolves and werewolves, and had figured out that the Alpha was the one in charge of the pack, the leader, the one who called all the shots. When I gave it thought, I realised that Zane was probably the Alpha of his pack. The Beta was his second in command, and I was guessing that Aaron was Zane’s. There were probably others in his pack too, except Sheila, Ajax and Warner, all of them having their own roles, but not important enough for them to have distinct titles. According to Google, the entire pack lived together in a large house called the packhouse. It didn’t make sense, though, because I had been to Zane’s place before. It didn’t seem like he lived there with so many other people.
Blake on the other hand, was still a complete mystery. I didn’t know where exactly he came from, what he was doing here, or what he wanted with me. But he had to have an ulterior motive, and I was afraid it involved me in some way. Why else would he come here and immediately start protecting me? There had to be some catch. And Zane’s sudden interest in me as soon as

Blake showed up was also proof that all of this was somehow connected to me. Whether I liked it or not.
I’d even tried to search about the tingles I felt when they touched me. The search results were full of steamy fantasy books about werewolves and their mates. I did not dwell on it for too long, not yet ready to face another potential horror.
So I distracted myself and focused on the problem at hand: my newest friend at school could turn into a gigantic monster and had ulterior motives for showing up in town, while my oldest enemy in school could also turn into a huge animal and was suddenly acting too interested in me.
Everything will be fine, Lia, I kept telling myself, and before I knew it, sunlight poured in through the window.
The day had passed already, and it was time to go to school again. To face them again.
But no one could force me to show up. At this point, I couldn’t care less about academics or scholarships. My life was on the line here. I could cut myself some slack.
I stayed in bed the next couple of hours, realising that I had fallen sick. My head was aching and my body was burning up. Maybe it was the result of not sleeping, or that of stress. But I was sick, which gave me the perfect excuse to skip school.
I ignored Mom when she came knocking on my door for the first

couple of times, after which she used the key and walked in. I grumbled about privacy, while she approached me and pressed a hand to my forehead.
“Lia,” she said in alarm, “you have a fever, honey. Why didn’t
tell me?” she asked.

“It’s why I’m not going to school, Mom. I thought it’s obvious.”
“It’s not obvious,” she scolded. “You should always tell me when you’re sick.”
“I’m sorry,” I replied. “I’m okay, I promise.”
“You have become really irresponsible, Lia. Thank God for your friend, who showed up asking about you. Otherwise I would have just let you be and you wouldn’t even have told me that you’re ill.”
I froze.
“My… friend?”
“Yes, that sweet boy from that day. What was his name? Oh yeah, Blake.”
I immediately sat up, my eyes wide.
“He’s—he’s here?”

Mom frowned. “Yes. He’s downstairs.
rong, Lia?”
“Mom, you need to tell him to leave.”
“Why? Is everything okay?”
“Mom, just tell him to go. I can’t see him.”
“Okay, I will, but at least tell me why.”
“Mom,” I cried, “I just–” The words died on my lips as Blake entered my bedroom, and leaned against the doorframe.
A shiver crawled through me.
“Blake,” I muttered, and Mom turned around with a frown.
