Chapter 45 – Dark Urges–2
–LIA’S POV–
“I almost died.”

“Exactly,” he said. “At the hands of a werewolf. I thought you would scream and cry to get away from me when you woke up.”
I frowned. “Why would I do that? You’re the one who saved me, Zane. If someone from your… species tried to harm me, why should I hold it against you? When you’re the only reason I’m still breathing?”
Zane gave me a small smile. “I’m glad you see it that way.”
“There is no other way to see it. Sure, I was afraid when I first found out what you are. But you can’t blame me for that. Human beings tend to fear what they don’t understand. And the revelation of what you and Blake were completely rocked my world. But that doesn’t mean I start overlooking every good thing you do and focus only on what bad you’re capable of. Even a human can kill. Doesn’t mean I start fearing them all.”
“It’s good to beware of strangers, though. Or people who act like your friends and then turn their back on you when you need it the most,” Zane said.
“You’re talking about Blake,” I said softly.

Zane remained silent, neither accepting nor denying it. But he didn’t have to. I already knew.
“He was hurt too, Zane.”
“So? He left his mate and ran off. He did not even care to follow to make sure you were okay.”
“He probably knew that you and your pack would protect me. His isn’t here, so he was in danger himself.”
Zane smiled, shaking his head. “You’re making excuses for him, and I don’t understand why. Did you kiss him too at your little date?”
His words and tone offended me. “No, I did not. What kind of a person do you think I am?”
He sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it that way.”
“Yes, you did.”
“No, I didn’t. You don’t understand the situation here, Lia.”
“Then explain it,” I pushed. “I’d like to know what you meant.”
Zane changed the gear, and then ran his hand through his hair.
“Look, mates are tricky. Werewolves are very dependent on their mates. Physically, emotionally, mentally. In every way.

And we are designed to be extremely territorial and possessive of our mates. A werewolf is only supposed to have one in their
entire life time.”
“I know that.”
“Yeah, so sharing a mate sucks. Big time. It is uncommon for a werewolf to have a human mate, but it happens enough. However, two strong Alphas from different packs, having the same, human mate, is completely unheard of.”
“What are you getting at, Zane?”
He sighed. “If it was me, instead of Blake, I would’ve fought with everything I have against The Order to protect you. I would have carried you to safety or died trying. And I would never have entrusted your security to anyone else, even if the other person was stronger and claimed to be your mate. Blake’s reaction, as a werewolf, as your mate, was unnatural.”
“Do you mean to say that he’s lying?” I asked incredulously. “You think he isn’t my mate?”
“I don’t know for sure, love. But there is something wrong. And I want you to be careful around him.”
“How do I know you’re not just saying these things to make me wary of him?” I asked. “For all I know, you could be lying too.”
‘Really? After you kissed me, you still think I could be lying

about having a supernatural connection with you?”

“I don’t think that, but you don’t know that for Blake either. That’s all I mean.”

“And I never said I’m certain. Yes, Lia, this could be my talking. But what if I’m right? Would it kill you to be a little careful?” he snapped.
I lowered my gaze. “No, it wouldn’t. You’re right,” I said softly.
“Thank you,” he said. “Sorry, didn’t mean to snap.”
“It’s okay,” I whispered. “Just so you know, I do feel those tingles when our skins make contact. With Blake, I mean.”
Zane kept his gaze on the road, silent for a moment. “If you’re sure that you do, then yeah, he probably is your mate. But still. not a very trustworthy one.”
“Doesn’t being a good lover come naturally to you guys?” I frowned.
“Usually, yes. But for Blake and I, the situation is a bit twisted. I don’t know what effect it might have on his wolf. I too have had some dark urges for you, Lia. There is at
you, Lia. There is a reason I have shown. up to your bedroom at night so many times. I never hurt you, I never tried to do anything, because the moment I lay my eyes on you, I am filled with a sense of peace. As long as you’re in front of me, alive and well, your presence alone relaxes me.”

I blinked, fear circling my heart. “What kind of dark urges do you mean?” I whispered.
Zane bit his lip, keeping his gaze on the road.
“Zane,” I said, “what kind of dark urges?”
“Nothing I would ever actually do, Lia.”
“Answer the question.”
“The urge to mark you. Or to turn you. To take you to my pack house and force you into submission. Force you to give in to me, to the bond between us. To have you whether you like it or not. It terrified me, that the thought even crossed my mind. So I hurried and came to see you, because I knew that the second. I look at you, the second I breathe in your scent, all negative thoughts would melt away.”
I swallowed, my heart hammering in my chest. The car didn’t feel so safe now. “And if they didn’t?” I whispered.
“Then I have enough control over myself that I would go far, far away from you. Somewhere I couldn’t return to hurt you. from even if I wanted.” Zane parked the car behind my house, and turned to me fully, taking my hand in his. “I would rip my own heart out before letting myself do anything to hurt you, Lia Snow. But I cannot say the same for Blake—and that’s what I’m worried about.”
