Chapter 14
Devon tried to say more, but the line went dead.
He nervously met Blake’s eyes in the rearview mirror before awkwardly putting his phone down.
Blake let out a bitter laugh, his eyes filled with mockery. “Who told you to call her? She’s probably praying I’ll drop dead soon so she can run off with whoever she’s screwing these days.”
Devon gripped the steering wheel tighter, not daring to speak.
Should they head back to River Haven or go to the hospital?
Blake stared at the car ceiling, his face intermittently illuminated by passing streetlights, revealing flashes of self-loathing in his eyes.
After a long silence, he finally said, “Take me home.”
‘But sir, your hand…”
It’s fine.”
Devon had no choice but to drive back to the estate.
Less than ten minutes after arriving home, a call came from the Westwood family mansion. Mrs. Westwood had fallen during her evening walk and was now ir he hospital.
3lake couldn’t delay-he rushed to the hospital right away.
The Westwoods owned several high-end medical facilities, and family members typically received treatment at these locations when injured.
After receiving the call, Amber hurriedly changed and rushed to the hospital. The moment she stepped out of her car, she spotted Blake.
he froze, then pretended not to see him, quickly making her way into the hospital.
Blake watched her retreating figure-she was avoiding him like he carried the plague.
t irritated him beyond reason.
imber soon reached Mrs. Westwood’s hospital room. Mrs. Westwood looked pale as she greeted family members gathered around her bed. “I’m fine, just wasn’t vatching my step on the stairs. Now, all of you go home.”
tenée, Blake’s mother was holding Mrs. Westwood’s hand.
Mom, please stop taking these evening walks. You nearly gave us all a heart attack.”
Mrs. Westwood waved dismissively, her eyes searching beyond the family members until she spotted Amber. Her face immediately brightened. “Amber, dear! Why are you here? You’ve only just recovered yourself. Who called you?”
imber felt uncomfortable appearing before the Westwood family, especially with so many of them in the room.
And what did Grandma mean? Wasn’t she the one who had someone call Amber?
Renée’s expression darkened at the sight of Amber, while others in the room exchanged smug glances.
Everyone knew Renée despised her daughter-in-law. Years ago, Blake was supposed to be celebrating his engagement to Victoria Reed, but Amber had pulled hat stunt, forcing Blake to marry her instead.
For three years. Amber had obediently stayed confined to River Haven. Except for the few times Mrs. Westwood had summoned her, nobody ever sought her put voluntarily.
in three years of marriage to Blake, Amber had only met her mother-in-law a handful of times, and each encounter had been frosty at best.
Renee stood up, her tone hostile. “Mom, you need to rest. You shouldn’t be associating with certain… questionable individuals.”
Mrs. Westwood knew this was a thinly veiled attack on Amber. She clutched her chest in anger. “All of you, out! I only want Amber to look after me.”
The others had no choice but to leave.
Amber stood nearby, waiting until everyone had gone before approaching the bed. “Grandma, are you alright? How did you fall?”
Mrs. Westwood took her hand, sighing. “It’s so late-I hope I didn’t disturb your rest?”
It was already one in the morning. Had she driven herself or taken a cab?
“Not at all.”
‘Amber, you didn’t go back to River Haven tonight. Where did you stay? You don’t have another place, did you check into a hotel? Was it safe?”
Amber opened her mouth, momentarily at a loss for words.
