Chapter 27
In the past, Amber would have snapped back, finding his comment irritating.
But now, she felt nauseated just looking at him. She stood up after washing her hands and started to walk away.
She hadn’t eaten much today, though, and a wave of hypoglycemia hit her. She nearly collapsed face first onto the pavement.
The expected pain never came-Blake caught her in his arms.
His expensive suit immediately smeared with dirt. He’d exited the car so quickly he hadn’t brought an umbrella, and now raindrops were falling on both of
them.
Devon, who was driving, quickly got out with an umbrella.
Blake’s Rolls-Royce came with its own umbrella-reportedly worth around $1,000 retail.
When the dizziness subsided, Amber tried to push him away.
But Blake only held her tighter, practically dragging her into the car.
“Let me GO!”
In the struggle, Amber’s laptop slipped from her hands and hit the ground with a screen-shattering crack.
She froze, immediately bending down to check it. The computer had already been unresponsive earlier, but now it was completely destroyed.
Blake seized the opportunity to close the car door. Noticing her frantic inspection of the laptop, he reached over to take it from her.
“DONT touch my computer!”
She clutched it protectively, like a wild animal guarding food, her eyes cold as ice as she glared at him.
Her gaze held the venom reserved for mortal enemies.
Blake felt something snap inside him. A surge of anger rose as he forcefully grabbed the laptop from her.
Amber lunged at him like a woman possessed, trying to reclaim it, but she had little strength left. So he easily kept her at bay with one hand.
His knowledge of computers exceeded hers. After just a brief examination, he could tell the hardware was completely ruined.
“It’s beyond repair. I’ll get you a new one another day.”
Amber’s struggling body suddenly went still. A bitter smile twisted her lips as she turned silently to stare at the rain outside.
The sky was completely covered with rain, the entire city drowning in the downpour-just like her world was crumbling around her.
When Blake uttered those words, she knew with absolute certainty that the man who once doted on her, who couldn’t bear to see her suffer even the slightest discomfort, was truly gone.
Blake noticed the deathly resignation that came over her. His brow furrowed. “It’s just a computer. I’ll have Devon get you a new one immediately. This thing is ancient-should’ve been replaced years ago.”
Amber remained silent, leaning back in her seat.
Her throat ached too much to speak.
The car stopped at River Haven, but she didn’t get out. “This isn’t my home.”
Blake had been verbally dismissing the outdated laptop, but the entire ride he’d been trying to salvage it.
Hearing her words now, his expression darkened instantly.
Amber addressed Devon in the front seat. “Please take me to Cedar Ridge.”
Cedar Ridge was where she currently lived-property owned by Julian Westwood.
BANG!
Blake slammed the already broken laptop against the seat, shattering it beyond recognition.
“Amber, do you even remember you’re a married woman?”
