Chapter 7
At first, I had complete faith in Auren.
And he did exactly what I thought he would-spent seven days and nights looking for Dad out there in the ocean.
For those seven days, he didn’t eat a single thing
The only reason he didn’t die was because I forced him to drink water.
I secretly filmed Auren searching for Dad and sent the videos to him.
Dad just smiled when he saw them and didn’t text back.
After seven days of trying everything and still no sign of Dad, I finally convinced Auren to give up and come home.
With Dad suddenly dead, Auren started taking over as the “next in line” at Vale Corp.
You could tell he’d actually picked up some skills from Dad over the years.
He wasn’t as smooth or confident as Dad when dealing with problems, but he managed to keep the company from completely crashing.
The day we relaunched, after we’d had sex, Auren pulled me close and whispered.
“Nerissa, now that your dad’s gone, I don’t wanna keep the Vale name on the company. It makes me sad every time I see it. Can we change it to Thesvale Corp?”
My heart dropped, but I remembered how desperate Auren looked when he was searching for Dad.
I decided to trust him.
The next day, that huge sign on our building got changed to Auren’s last name.
This was the first time I didn’t send Dad a video of what Auren was doing.
After that, I started texting Dad way less.
Because things were going out of control.
For the first time, Auren got a female secretary.
At first, when I gave him attitude about it, he fired her no questions asked.
But when they brought in Orielle, Auren stopped giving a shit about my feelings.
For the first time, he started getting impatient with me.
“Nerissa, when are you gonna drop this spoiled princess act? Don’t you get that women make better secretaries ’cause they pay attention to details? The company’s barely hanging on right now-can you please not cause drama?”
He seemed to forget that when he first got to Vale Corp, he was Dad’s personal assistant.

Chapter 7
At his first company meeting, he’d literally said.
“I think men make way better personal assistants than women-they’re tougher, make better decisions, think more clearly…”
He’d gone on and on about all these great qualities, but when it came to Orielle, he forgot everything.
Then Auren started getting home later and later.
The guy who never had business dinners past nine was suddenly rolling in after midnight.
Eventually, he even stopped showing up to my weekly doctor visits.
Dad texted me out of nowhere.
“Sweetheart, you can still get out of this now…”
But I wasn’t ready to give up. I couldn’t believe the man I’d married would fail the test this badly.
Until Auren threw me in that freezer because of Orielle’s fucking period.
Right then, my heart just went dead.
I finally saw this asshole for who he really was.
All these years, he’d never actually loved me…
Maybe from the second he walked into that job interview eight years ago, maybe even when he “saved” me from that chandelier, he’d been playing me…
“Nerissa, don’t shut me out like this. You’re freaking me out. Please just forgive me, okay? I really do love you. You can’t have forgotten everything we’ve been through these past eight years, right?”
Auren’s shaky voice pulled me back to reality.
I looked at him, took a deep breath, and said flat out.
“Emm…I have.”
