- Chapter 62
- Roman
- “Roman…” Samara says as we walk away from Sloane’s room.
- I put a finger to my lips to quiet her. When we get to our room, I lead her in and close the door.
- “What if Scarlet pressured her to change her room around. I don’t want her to feel like she can’t have it the way she wants,” Samara says, worry evident on her face and in her voice.
- I wrap my arms around her waist and pull her to me. “I think maybe we’re the ones who pressured her into keeping her room the same. I’ve known Scarlet all her life. She’s a lot like her mother, very protective. She was covering for Sloane. My guess is, Sloane didn’t want her room to look like it used to, for whatever reason. But we never asked her, did we? We just assumed it would make it easier for her.”
- She opens her mouth, then closes it again, frowning.
- “Why didn’t she say anything?”
- “Well, that’s a more important question, if you ask me. Is she not comfortable enough with us yet to be honest? Is she afraid we’re angry with her because what her parents did? She’s been through a lot and Scarlet seems to be helping her tonight. Let’s let Scarlet work her magic and we’ll try to talk to Sloane tomorrow.”
- She leans her head against my chest, and I press my lips to the top of her head.
- “How could you tell?” she murmurs against my chest.
- “She took down everything that reminded her of home. Remember, she didn’t want anything that belonged to her parents? Maybe she doesn’t want anything to remind her of them at all. That may change one day and we can put her things in storage in case the day ever comes. Tomorrow, one of us needs to sit with her, maybe include Scarlet if Sloane is okay with it, and see if she wants to replace her entire bedroom.“.
- I feel a powerful wave of love roll through the bond as Samara looks up at me, reaching up to cup my cheek.
- I love this feeling. I will never get tired of feeling it from my mate.
- “What?” I ask softly, wanting to know what I did right so I can do it again and again.
- “You’re a wonderful man, Roman Hartwell. You’re loving, caring, and intuitive. And all of those things are rolled into this powerful, sexy body of yours,” she says, making me growl with pleasure and desire.
- “You think I’m sexy?” I ask, the growl rumbling in my chest.
- “I’m sure every woman who has ever laid eyes on you thinks you’re sexy,” she
- “I don’t care what anyone else thinks. I care what you think.”

- She runs her thumb over the scruff of my beard. “I think you’re the sexiest man I’ve ever seen in my life. And you don’t just have a great body, you know how to make your mate’s body feel pleasure unlike anything she’s ever dreamed of.”
- I take her mouth in a dominant kiss, pouring my love into her as hers wraps around me.
- When I pull back, I lean my forehead against hers. “I swear I can never get enough of you. One lifetime with you will still not be enough, Samara.”
- “We’ll just have to make the most of the time we have.”
- “Tonight,” I promise her.
- “Tonight,” she agrees.
- “Now, my mate and pup need to eat and our oldest … do we call her daughter or still call her our niece?” I ask.
- “We’ll ask her this time. We’ll let her call us what she decides,” she says.
- “Generous, intelligent, and utterly gorgeous. I can’t wait to show you how much I love you tonight.”
- “Me either,” she says. I growl again, kissing her nose and pulling away before I start something we won’t be able to finish.
- “Food first, and I want to talk to Austin and Elizabeth about becoming Alphas. Speaking of, I have an idea,” I say as we begin walking downstairs. “Austin is a Beta and I know we talked about him taking over Dylan’s pack while we decide what to do with your family’s pack. But, what if they took over the Brenner pack? We can decide if they become permanent Alphas or if Luca is slated for the Beta position when one of our sons takes over the pack. I think
- he’d do better with a smaller pack since he’s never been an Alpha” And since Sawyer’s Beta and Gamma moved here, the Beta position would be
- open in the next generation.”
- “What about Dylan’s pack?” she asks.
- I pull us into a hallway where we’re less likely to be overheard. “I’ve been thinking about that, too. I’m pretty sure Dylan was part of the whole betrayal and if so, he has to go. Dylan and his mate only have girls, no heir. You don’t have to answer now, but what if we hold the pack for Slade to take over one day? We’ve said we will not allow the pack to hold them responsible for what their parents did, but by keeping him from becoming an Alpha to a pack, we’re doing just that. But this way, he doesn’t get your family’s pack, he gets Sawyer and Dylan’s pack. We’ll raise him to be a good Alpha and when he comes of age, he can take over that pack.”
- I can feel the wheels turning in her head. I agree with her that Slade shouldn’t get the Brenner family pack, but why shouldn’t he get what amounts to his
- family’s pack?
- “You don’t have to answer right now. I’d rather you didn’t. Think about it and we’ll talk more,” I tell her.
- She nods, her mind obviously thinking through everything as I lead her back out. I walk to the kitchen to order two trays sent up for the girls and then find some warriors to put a TV in Sloane’s room.
- “Roman, if Austin and Elizabeth do move, what about this budding relationship between Sloane and Scarlet?”
- “Sleepovers,” he says. “Lots and lots of sleepovers. Theo and I did it all the time.”
- “Yeah, I always hated it when you went to your pack” she grumbles.
- “Couldn’t follow us that far, could you?” I chuckle.
- “Not without a wolf,” she says, still grumbling.
- “Have you seen Scarlet?” Elizabeth asks as we walk up. She has/Luca and Slade with her.
- “She’s with Sloane,” I say.
- Both she and Austin look at us. “Is that okay? I can go get her,” Austin says.
- “No, it’s perfect actually,” Samara says. “I think Scarlet js doing more for Sloane than we can right now.”
- “I’m sending up a TV and dinner for them. If they decide to have a sleepover on our floor, I’ll let you know.”
- “Oh, I hope so. It would be good for the two of them to become friends. They’re the same age and being Alpha and Beta, it makes things easier for them,” Elizabeth says.
- “Yes,” I say, already thinking about possible next steps.
- “About that, Roman and I would like to speak to the two of you tomorrow. I want to work with Sloane on ordering some new furniture for her room, but after that, maybe we can all get together?” Samara says.
- The two of them look at us. “Of course, I’d like to know what the plan is for confronting Dylan as well,” Austin says.
- “Tomorrow, I want to get the new folks who start arriving to accept all of us as their leaders and by this weekend, you and I will be making a trip to Dylan’s pack,” I say, looking at Samara.
- That gives all of us some time to make plans, depending on what she decides. The Brenner pack is hers. She should be the one who makes the decision about what happens to it.
- Over dinner, I watch as Luca helps distract Slade so he’ll eat. Elizabeth and Samara talk about Sloane and Scarlet, while Austin and I discuss where we’re putting all our new pack members. I want to announce to the pack that Samara is pregnant, but I want to tell Sloane first.
- Maybe we can do that tomorrow morning and announce it to the pack tomorrow night,‘ my mate’s voice floats into my mind.
- I lean over and kiss the side of her head, letting her know how much I love and appreciate her.
- ‘Perfect.
- We finish dinner and head back upstairs. Elizabeth and Austin agreed to take Slade with them until he got tired.
- When we walked down the hallway of our floor, I could hear the sound of the movie and excited girl talk.
- “EEEW! He puked up the head!” Scarlet says.
- “Is he supposed to eat it? That’s disgusting!” Sloane asks.
- What the fuck are they watching?
- I let Samara go in first, knowing she’s been worrying about Sloane since we left earlier. She knocks on the door jamb and steps in. I step in right behind her, just in time to see the look shift on Sloane’s face.
- “Hey, how’s it going up here?” Samara asks.
- “Is the movie too loud?” Sloane asks, worried.
- “No, not at all. We were just checking on you,” Samara tells her.
- “What are you watching anyway?” I ask, walking farther into the room to see.
- “How To Train Your Dragon. It’s pretty good,” Scarlet says.
- “You know what would make it better?” I ask.
- Sloane looks at me and shakes her head.
- “Popcorn.”
- “YES!” Scarlet yells, startling Samara.
- “I’ll have them bring some up,” I say.
- “And maybe a candy bar or two?” Scarlet asks, looking hopeful.
- I glance at their trays and see that Sloane ate more than she has since her parents‘ death.
- “I think a couple of candy bars would be okay, don’t you, Roman?” Samara asks, watching Sloane carefully.
- “Sure,” I say, mind tinking the omegas in the kitchen and putting in the request.
- “Can we have a sleepoyer?” Scarlet asks, scooting closer to Sloane. I can tell they’ve already talked about it.
- “I told Sloane that, if it’s okay, I could sleep in her room tonight and then she could sleep in my room tomorrow night.”
- “Should I warn your parents that you’ll be rearranging your room to make it more ‘mature‘?” I ask her.
- “Uhhh, ye… yeah,” she says hesitantly, and I have to fight my grin. I know for a fact that Scarlet and Elizabeth spent a lot of time making her room exactly the way she wants it, which is how I knew she was covering for Sloane earlier.
- “Well, you never know, maybe it will seem more mature tomorrow,” I say, giving her the out.
- “Definitely,” she says, relaxing.
- “You girls have fun tonight. I’d say don’t stay up too late, but I doubt you’ll listen.”
- “Where’s Slade?” Sloane asks.
- “He’s on the Beta floor with Elizabeth and Luca,” Samara tells her. “They’ll bring him up to his room when he gets tired and they’ll probably come say goodnight to you then, Scarlet.”
- “Okay!”
- “Well, goodnight girls,” Samara says.
- “Goodnight, Luna,” Scarlet says, jumping up and rushing over to hug her.
- “Goodnight, Alpha,” she says, coming over to hug me next.
- Sloane gets to her feet and walks over to Samara.
- “Goodnight, Aunt Samara,” she says. Samara wraps her arms around her, holding her tightly.
- “We’re going to start looking at bedroom furniture first thing tomorrow, Sloane. I want you to be happy here. This is your home now,” she says and I feel Ayla pushing forward, adding her weight to what Samara is saying.
- I watch Sloane close her eyes and she stays in Samara’s embrace longer than I expected. When she pulls away, she gives her a small smile. At least it’s a real smile.
- “Thank you,” Sloane says.
- “Do I get a hug too?” I ask.
- “Goodnight, Uncle Roman,” she says, her hug with me is much quicker. Just as we’re about to step out of the room, the popcorn and candy arrive.
- “YAY!” Scarlet says, jumping up to grab it. “Thanks, Layla!” she says, thanking the omega.
- “Yes, thank you, Layla,” Sloane says.
- “Thank you, Layla,” I say as we walk out with her.
- “You’re very welcome, Alpha. Sometimes friendship is the best medicine, isn’t it?” she asks.
