Chapter 102

Kiera, the name didn’t seem familiar, I hadn’t heard it before but Zade seemed awfully sure that Darian would know it.

He left after the very brief visit and now I just sat on the edge of the bed with my feet firmly on the floor in case I needed to spring up as fast as possible.

I waited for him to return. I waited for so long that my mind started spinning around the possibility of him not returning at all. It wasn’t like him to forgo the hunt of an enemy which Zade clearly was now so why would he come back without having found him?

It’s a dangerous thing to be caught up in your thoughts because you don’t hear the sounds around you as well as you should.

I missed the footsteps outside the door but I caught the doors slamming open and violently hitting the walls. He had to have broken them, there wasn’t a chance that they were attached to their hinges after that sound.

The small table with the vase that welcomed you into the room was thrown across the floor from behind the wall and the freshly picked floors lay scattered across the carpet.

I heard his breaths, they were heavy and fighting to control the rage he carried.

As it turned out I did need to spring to my feet and I backed away further into the room when I heard him barging around the corner.

It was like he didn’t expect me to be there. His eyes found mine and for a moment there was visible shock on his face but it vanished like the clouds on a sunny summer day.

A drop of blood was stuck on his hairline and a cut went deep down the side of his face and stopped in line with his flaring nostrils. It wasn’t healing, I watched the skin around his wound and the fresh blood that pooled in the deep cut. That should be healing.

His fingers were coiled and his shoulders were rigid like the bow of an arrow when he barged over. His lips pulled back in a snarl and he raised his hand but stopped right before he reached me. Darian watched my face, I didn’t show a fear that he hadn’t seen before but something made his hand twitch in the air, inches away from my neck.

“Did you find him?”

“Why the fuck, Hazel!” Trixy growled.

I internally kicked myself and cursed my tongue. Why couldn’t I just keep my mouth shut?

A loud growl rumbled in his chest and left his lips like a violent warning. His hand shot out and he grabbed my neck, my feet lifted off the floor as I was lunged across the room and pressed up against the wall. I clawed at his hand but it was like trying to bend the fingers of a metal-forged statue and my breaths were becoming increasingly shallow.

“How is it that you never learn? No matter what I do to you, you never learn to keep your mouth shut,” he seethed through gritted teeth.

“Did she learn?” I said hoarsely, “Did Kiera learn?”

The grimace on his face…the rounding off his eyes…the way his jaw dropped and his hand loosened until I fell to my feet and caught a much-needed breath.

He staggered back two steps and raked his fingers through his hair.

“What did you say?” His voice wasn’t louder than a whisper.

Red veins in his eyes started appearing and his cheeks grew flustered.

“How do you know that name?” He turned around and his eyes were flickering over the room.

“Who is she?” I trod carefully, each word was thought out but this was uncharted territory for me. Maybe for both of us.

He stopped in the center of the room and drew a deep breath, his shoulders rose with the inhale and landed with the exhale.

His chest sunk and his arms relaxed when he regained control and found the balance in his feet.

Chapter 102

Darian turned his head halfway and I saw the side of his face.

“You should get some rest,”
