Chapter 118

They were asking him to choose between me and his brother, the only person he’s had by his side since the day he was born..

I backed away and saw in his eyes how his mind was reeling around the options, not who to choose but how to get the hell out of there. He looked at me and narrowed his eyes with a knowing gaze, Darian had the same one, and after that gaze usually came a sorely thought-out plan which often ended in a lot of bloodshed and dead bodies.

The Elder was watching Gabe, patiently waiting for his decision.

“The brother who would lay down his life in a heartbeat to protect you, or a girl you stumbled upon in the palace. She has no value to either of you and has only been part of a game that has brought so much pain to everyone involved. She will never forgive him, Gabriel, are you sure that you can watch your brother go through the pain of losing yet another girl?”

The grey around us looked colorful in comparison to what I saw in his eyes, the darkness that drowned in his sad depths exposed how the levers in his head were now working to cope with what he was hearing.

Gabe saw Darian’s pain when Ophelia left him and lived by his side while his brother coped with a broken heart and the loss of his daughter. I don’t think Gabe can live through it again and he doesn’t either; it’s written all over his face.

After seeing the answer in his eyes I took another weak step back but this time I hit something hard and couldn’t move any further. Just when I was about to spin around and see what I’d hit, Zade’s hand came around my neck and he pulled me back.

Gabe was in front of me before I could blink and grabbed my waist, he pulled me around him and slammed at Zade’s shoulders- pushing him back a step but then he was gone, and in his place was a black fog.

The door opened up and a man dressed in a vest, cargo pants, and combat boots stood like a soldier and waited to be recognized.

“Yes?” The Elder spoke.

“The table has been set,”

I watched the Elder’s face closely and his expression turned light and excited. Something had been prepared and Gabe felt it too. We were too kept in the dark for my liking, if they wanted to they could kill us and nobody would bat an eye. They’ve already proven what lengths they will go through to get what

they want.

“Lead the way,” The Elder walked after him and stopped in the doorframe, he looked over his shoulder and gestured with his hand to the hall.

“You must be hungry,”

“Not really,” Gabe sneered.

“Humor me,” he wouldn’t move until we followed and when I felt Gabe’s hand on my arm I realized that the Elder was the one who called the shots.

We were in his home, everyone here was an enemy to the crown which meant they were an enemy to us- we were after all here to defend it.

We turned down another hallway that you couldn’t see until you stood in front of it, it was an odd visual and whoever built this place was a menace.

The Elder stopped behind a wooden door with a metal frame and Gabe pulled me in close and always made sure to stand an inch in front of me.

When the door swung open the many voices on the other side hit us in the face and suddenly this place seemed a lot less dead and soulless.

“Stay close,” Gabe whispered and let go of my hand as walked in ahead of me.

We stopped a few steps in on the beige-colored carpet and the door closed behind me- the lock turned into place and my body stiffened from the sound. Then it dawned on me what Gabe had said earlier, about how this floor was for the Council members only, which meant that every man in here was a member of the Council.

They were the ones in charge, they were the ones who took Darian and they were the ones who created the game. It was these men who threatened to hurt Kiera, an innocent little girl these were the men who wanted my family dead.

I stepped back and drew a deep breath but when I looked around I noticed something that set my nerves on edge.

In each of the four corners sat a girl dressed in white sheer sheets with nothing underneath. They sat on their knees with their heads down, exposing their necks, and stared at the floor; one hand laid over the other in their lap and it wasn’t normally a detail I’d think was of importance if it wasn’t for the fact that every girl sat in the same position. Not one detail deviated.

“There is no beauty quite like that of a woman,”

For once I wasn’t startled by a voice, maybe I’d grown to expect his by now. Zade watched the girls like they were art at a museum, something invaluable but he wanted from them what every other man in here waited for.

“You think too little of me,” he said lowly and looked at me with a warm gaze. There was something serious in his eyes, something that wanted me to believe him and sometimes I wish that I was naive enough to do it- to stop fighting and just trust a person despite the obvious warnings telling me not to.

“I think nothing of you, you’re the furthest thing on my mind,” I whispered but my eyes flickered to his lips when I, for the briefest moment in history, thought back to our moment at the club.

He stepped closer and I didn’t move, nothing was threatening about his closeness right now.

Zade licked his lips and flickered his gaze over my face. “Do you think…” his voice dropped an octave and his eyes captured mine, “…that if things were different, if there had been no games, no Lycans, just us at the club meeting for the first time; do you think I would’ve stood a chance with you?”

I swallowed a growing lump in my throat and looked between his eyes and his lips.

Something about looking into his eyes made me forget where I was and I stood in a trance while I fumbled to speak but the words finally fell from my lips.

“No,” I answered.

Zade narrowed his eyes and clenched his jaw, he leaned in and his eyes darkened as he whispered, “That was your first lie,”
