Chapter 123

The key was right there in the palm of his hand, I could unlock the cell, Darian would kill Zade and we could leave. This could all be over.

“Or you can honor your sister’s memory and let him rot in that cell, take Gabriel, and leave with a promise never to return,” Zade closed his fingers around the key and lowered his hand.

Honor my sister’s memory, because she’s dead…because Darian killed her.

The pressure in my head was pushing against my skull and Trixy was as in as much pain from the memories as I was, she clawed against the floor bank of my mind and growled when she saw the key.

Everything he’s ever done played across my mind with memories that would forever haunt me but the thing that pained me the most was that I couldn’t hate him for it; I wanted to, it would be so much easier if I could hate his guts and turn around never to return, keeping my promise to Zade and living in peace for the rest of my life. But that wasn’t the truth. He didn’t hurt me because he enjoyed it, he did it to save his daughter. A little girl who was probably terrified used against her father to make him kneel for the Council and all he wanted was to get her back, to protect her, and bring her home.

“You know,” Zade’s eyes glimmered as the cobalt blue took over completely and covered his eyes. His jaw clenched and his features tensed as he drew to his fullest size and cast a shadow over me. He glared at me with an anger I’d yet to see coming from him, one I’ve only experienced from Darian but with the energy I felt emanating from him I did wonder; was it possible that Zade… that Zade was stronger?

I cowered under his glaring eyes and took a step back against the bars, right now I cursed myself for not having opened the cell door and freed Darian. Here I was, all alone against a fucking demon.

“You’re not supposed to know,” he seethed and the last thing i saw was his hand raised in the air before a burning pain sliced at my cheek and my head whipped to the side, slamming into the bars and a surreal pain throbbed throughout my face before everything went dark.

I woke up on something soft, when I ran my hands along the side of my body I felt the leather beneath me and when I turned on my side I almost rolled off. There was one light in the center of the ceiling shining down a golden hue over the room. On the floor, just below the lamp, was something carved into the stone floors and I narrowed my eyes on it as I sat on the leather couch and touched the side of my face; a throbbing pain pulsated up into my head.

The carved sigils were of a pentagram and when I looked around the round room I saw that every other source of light was from candles that stood in bundles of five on each table and on the sill by the red stained glass windows.

The cobblestone floor stretched around the room and the walls were grey brick. A large work table stood in front of the window and through the red stained glass, the sun shone in leaving a warm dimmed light on the floor.

There was a silver chalice next to a quill and a parchment- taking up almost half the table were the candles that burned with flickering flames.

I only saw his back, it wasn’t until now that I noticed the tattoo running down his neck. When Zade turned around his shirt hung open exposing his chiseled front.

In his hand was a wooden bowl and he crushed some herbs between his fingers and mixed them around.

“That mark on your neck; do you know the abilities a mark like that has?”

Other than hurting like a bitch and tying me to a tyrant?

“It creates a link between me and Darian,”

Zade turned his head from side to side and grabbed the back of a chair, dragging it behind him across the stone floor as he walked toward me.

“It’s a soul bond and quite a special one. A werewolf can mark an astounding number of females whereas a Lycan can mark only one. They choose with great care who their chosen mate will be because once she is marked, they can’t ever mark another,”

That had to be wrong, I don’t believe him.

“What about Ophelia?” I said, sounding like a smart ass, as though I won something by being right.

Ophelia was, after all, Darian’s first love- his chosen mate and the mother of his child.

“Do I sense a little jealousy?” He cooed and turned the chair, he took a seat next to the couch and continued pinching the herbs between his fingers.

“Please,” I scoffed and shook my head.

What was there to be jealous of a nasty hag who slept her way to power and then used her child for her own selfish gains?

Zade bit down on his lip and his smoldering gaze pierced my eyes. He chuckled and poured another pinch into the bowl before mixing it around with his index and middle finger

“The King never marked Ophelia, I guess a part of him always knew that she’d end up a backstabbing whore,”

“Charming,”

Zade chuckled and shook the bowl around three times.

“The mark is his way into your soul. He sees what you see, he feels what you feel and he hears what you hear. Has there never been a situation where he’s just shown up? Like he knew exactly where you were without you having told him anything,”

I could think of a few times that’s happened.

“It’s the mark,”

“So it’s like a GPS?” boredom seeped through my words.

“More like a one-sided window, through which he sees every choice you make,” he cut open his hand and poured his blood into the bowl. “I’m going to manipulate the soul bond so that my eyes become his new window and then I’m going to make him watch while I fuck his little puppet nice and hard,”

The blood rushed to my face and I felt how my eyes rounded as I moved back- the leather made a screeching sound under my hands and Trixy bared her

teeth.

“Don’t you dare touch me,” I seethed.

He lifted a careless shoulder and mixed the herbs with his blood.

“I’m not going to force you into anything, you will do it willingly,” there was a confidence in his tone that I didn’t like.

“You’re sick. Why the hell would I do that?” I asked in an exhale and coiled my fingers. His eyes locked with mine and a sinister smirk shadowed his lips.

“Because I know that your sister is alive and the Elder doesn’t,”
