Chapter 127

Gabe turned his head halfway towards the door and closed his eyes while he listened. I didn’t hear anything outside of this room, no footsteps or voices, and neither did Trixy or she would’ve warned me but then again, we weren’t Lycan’s.

He opened his eyes, his head flew up and he rolled back his shoulders and took a strong stance.

“They’re on their way, we need to leave,”

Damn, seems like every Lycan ability is superior to ours.

I shook my head, raised my chin, and looked at Darian who hadn’t taken his eyes off me since he walked in here and helped me off the floor.

“No not yet, I need answers,” I demanded softly. The strength in my voice had taken the backseat and though I tried to call on it, my voice remained meek and tired.

“I’ll give them to you, I promise but right now we need to go,” Darian said.

I took a step back and lifted my head. There was no chance that I was leaving with them, they either told me what I wanted to know or I’d leave on my own. Even if he told me the truth, I had no reason to trust him but what choice did I have right now?

“Fine, then you guys go. I’ll make my way back and we’ll be done,”

“What?” Darian’s brows furrowed and his eyes darkened as they narrowed dangerously.

Stand your ground, Hazel. Don’t dare submit.

“That was the deal I made with Gabe-” Gabe was shaking his head furiously behind his brother but I didn’t mind him, I was watching Darian’s face twist and turn in confusion and anger over hearing my words, “-I help to free you and in return, I will leave the palace and the pack for good,” my voice dropped another octave and the last words left my lips in silent whispers when I watched him coil his fingers and push his chest out.

He’d hidden it well but the beast wasn’t fiction, it was just hiding under the surface, lurking and waiting until something pulled it out. He took a step toward me and I didn’t move, Darian towered over me and pinned me down with his hardened glare.

“You’re not going anywhere,” he growled, articulating each word like he was in any position to be making demands.

My jaw fell and my tongue twisted in my mouth when I thought of the words I wanted to say but before I could get anything out Gabe came between us and put his hand on Darian’s shoulder. For the first time since he came in here, his eyes moved from mine, and stared with a deadly glare at Gabe’s hand which he carefully, slowly, and with controlled movements removed and held at his side so he wouldn’t lose it.

“We don’t have time for this, we either leave now or hope that we can kill our way through the entire Council and their thousands of Dark Guards- highly trained assassins, trained since they were pups with any last drop of empathy beaten out of their system-”

“I got it, Gabriel,” Darian growled and Gabe pursed his lips and nodded in compliance. He’s learned when to shut up.

Darian turned his head and looked past his brother who stood between us. Nothing could make him look somewhere else, not even Gabe’s body acting as a human shield stopped the glares shooting from his deep eyes.

Gabe puffed a silent sigh and walked over to Nate and Abby and they opened the door.

Darian watched me, he walked closer and I felt my heart beating faster when I saw the danger lurking in his eyes, the one I was so used to by now. There was something comfortable in watching him act out of the beast he was and not the man he pretended to be.

“Walk.” He ordered.

The others turned their heads down and looked at the floor. Gabe shot me a pitiful glance when I scoffed, and looking around I knew there wasn’t any point in trying so I barged across the room.

“Fine,” I spat.

I knew what I was in for if I didn’t go. He’d just throw me over his shoulder or drag me out of here by my arms. The anger I felt was something else, something entirely foreign to me. How could he shift like that? From being gentle and kind to a sadistic monster.

We hurried down the hallway and took a left but I looked around and didn’t recognize anything from where we’d been before. This had to be another floor or another part of the same floor that we didn’t get to see because everything was different; the colors were royal blue and warmer shades of grey and the doors were cream white with black knobs. This was more than a different floor, it was an entirely different part of the Council, I was starting to hear voices,

lots of them.

“This way,” Darian said and pulled me behind him.

The voices were many and all around us as we pushed through a metal door and happened upon a stone staircase. When I listened in I heard people talking about business, packs, contracts, and family names that all sounded familiar.

“Where the hell are we?” I asked and looked around at the massive corridor with one stone staircase leading up and another leading down, rounded at the bottom leading to yet another hallway.

Crystal lamps sat high on the walls along the staircase offering a dimmed light and the dark walls weren’t designed to keep voices hidden.

Darian put his finger on his lips, “shh,”

Excuse me?

My brows rose to my hairline and I shook my head, baffled by the disrespect but Darian grabbed my arm and pulled me in.

“Stop pouting. This isn’t the administrative part of the Council,” he must’ve seen the confusion twist my features because then he leaned down and his lips brushed over my ear, “there aren’t supposed to be voices here,” he whispered.
