Chapter 131

The gold in his eyes swirled when he fought with his wolf. Something was there on the surface, the words sat on his lips but it pained him to speak them, or maybe he was afraid. Did Darian get afraid? Did he know the meaning of the word?

“Your parents knew,” he pressed out.

My heart felt like it stopped beating in my chest and contracted like a shriveling leaf.

“What?”

“When I went there that day it was because Mr. Ashbury had put out the hit on your family, my next part in their game was to kill them. I went there and decided to explain everything, it could only end in one way but I needed them to know because I knew there was no reality where you would forgive me for doing what I needed to without at least giving them a chance. They were terrified but ultimately didn’t care about their own lives as long as I could guarantee your sisters and yours. They begged me to keep Mathilda safe, to not let her be harmed and dragged into this mess. Your mother asked me to hide her from everyone…including you,”

“She thought I wanted to hurt-”

“No, no, no! She just wanted your little sister away from the dangers that live around you. Away from me. And the Council wouldn’t have believed that I succeeded unless you did but I didn’t kill your father. Your father took his own life, Hazel, he did it on his terms, in his chair with the knife that was gifted to him when he became Beta. And your mother…” he stopped and his throat bobbed as he gulped.

“…I killed her, and I waited for you to come because you had to see to it,”

“I had to break,” I murmured through the tears under my breath.

“She knew what waited and she offered her life, she told me to do what I needed to to end this. Before you came I placed a flower in your sister’s chest, close to her heart, it’s the only way it worked,”

I furiously wiped the tears away.

“How what worked?”

“The flower contains a natural poison that stops the heart but the effects are reversible if treated in time. When we left I had a guard take her to where she is now, she was treated, brought back, and is being looked after,”

“My mom-”

“Gave her life to help you,”

My mother and I were close when I was younger before my mind was fully developed and I couldn’t smell the bullshit that I was being forced into but even when I learned, I still loved her. She and my father only taught me what they knew, it wasn’t their fault that I wanted something else. She was the one who brought me up to think with my head before believing everything I hear and see but she also wanted a submissive daughter who would take a man. Our family wasn’t perfect, we were messy in more ways than I could describe but it was mine.

The wind blew in around us in a breeze that caressed my cheek though I couldn’t tell where it came from. Darian was carefully watching me, waiting for me to react or say something but I was numb. I thought he killed them in cold blood.

I remember Mr. Ashbury’s body dead on the floor of the Ballroom. How could someone be so evil to kill a family that had done nothing wrong just to punish a man and torment a girl?

No matter how hard I tried to think of reasons I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what I’d done to deserve what had happened. Maybe I didn’t have to. This was my life, it was the cards I’d been dealt, maybe I just had to suck it up and stop trying to find reasons for the pain that had dug its claws into my back.

“I’m so sorry,” he said. And he looked sincere but it was too hard for me to trust him.

My body was tired, my mind felt numb and I didn’t know what to think about anything anymore.

A heavy breath left his lips and he leaned in. Every movement was careful and decisive. His breaths fanned my face as he dropped his head to my neck and

graced his lips over the mark.

That goddamn mark.

I had three of them and they all belonged to him.

He pressed his lips on the edge and moved his tongue over the most sensitive part of my body, the one he knew was his. Whenever he touched it everything felt less heavy, less numb and my mind fell quiet. All because of a mark and his poison that ran in my veins. He knew what he was doing by touching it, the power it held over my mind and my body, and I didn’t stop him. I needed the peace even if it wouldn’t last forever.

“This wasn’t out of spite,” he pressed his lips against the scar. He spoke so slowly that I felt every breath with each word and his voice was low and breathy.

“It wasn’t for the game or the pleasure of the Council. This was me giving you everything that I am. I didn’t bind you to me, I bound myself to you,” he pressed a kiss closer to the center.

“Everything I am is yours, in this lifetime and every other that I promise to meet you in and beg for your forgiveness,” he leaned up and met my hazy gaze, “and, sweetheart, I don’t beg,” his eyes were dark with lust and deep swirling affection.
