Chapter 134

I don’t know why but my heart was pounding and my palms were getting wetter by the second that we stood waiting by the door. On the other side of this door were some of Valeria’s strongest werewolves who stood oblivious to the ambush about to happen but I couldn’t believe that they were so stupid as to not have a contingency plan in case something were to go wrong. They couldn’t be so cocky that they drop all of their defenses thinking they are safe just because they’re in the Council- that would be absurd, especially after everything they did to Darian when he thought he was safe in the palace.

A chill went down the left side of my neck and I turned to see Darian watching me.

“I won’t let anything happen to you, I promise,”

‘We don’t even know what waits on the other side of this door,” I said, hoping he’d take his words back because some promises aren’t his to make.

He turned his head and watched the door- he rolled back his shoulders and put on a veil that covered his emotions but still, there was a trace of something soft in his voice when he spoke.

“It doesn’t matter, whatever it is it won’t touch you,”

We listened but heard only breathing from several people. I couldn’t make out exactly how many they were but at least five as far as I could tell.

The smells were somewhat familiar, the Elder was definitely there which was fine, we counted on that. The others could be from the Dark Guard or maybe the Councilmen but I wasn’t sure.

Something was rustling and it was like they were deliberately quiet but they didn’t know that we were here so what was with all of the secrecy? Thankfully someone cleared their throat and I heard a loud thud and a whipping sound slashing through the air.

“Is it ready?” that was the Elder, I recognized his voice.

“Yes,” Someone answered him but I couldn’t tell who it was. Voices usually stuck with me, especially the ones that had made an impression whether it be good or bad and the Elder’s voice was the closest I’d gotten to a real freezing chill- it was the cold and menacing way that his tone held absolutely no emotion

“King Darian,” he called.

I froze and slowly lifted my head- Darian clenched his jaw and his shoulders took on a predatory bow but other than that nothing changed. The invisible veil covered his face, masking his emotions and leaving behind a calculating, fearless father who would do anything to get his pup back. Part of me was afraid of what it may entail.

“Please step out and greet us properly,” the Elder continued.

His forearms looked like they’d been cut from stone as he reached out for the door. There wasn’t a single moment of hesitation when the door slid open. The second that we were in their eyesight, Darian stepped in front and covered me.

As soon as I saw the glum look on the Elder and the Council chairmen Mr. Light, I knew that we weren’t the ambush, we were the ones being ambushed. They knew that we were here.

The other door opened up and Gabriel walked out ahead of Abby, shielding her as they held their backs straight while they carefully surveilled the room.

A rustling laugh peeled from the Elder’s crusty lips and they curled over his teeth as he smiled from ear to ear.

He scratched his chin, and the back of his black robe dragged on the ground when he took a step and stared with amusement at Darian.

I flickered my eyes over Gabe and then at Abby and lastly locked them at the closed door that Nate hadn’t opened yet.

Did he still think he could pull off a surprise attack now that we’d been caught?

An eery feeling crept up my legs and I looked ahead only to see the Elder watching me.

“Nate,” he said and raised his head while his smile deepened.

Chapter 134

“Why don’t you come on out,”

I looked at the door and swallowed the pit of fire lodged in my throat while I waited for him to come out but the door remained closed. We heard heavy footsteps and a tapping against the floor echo in the hallway across the room and the door opened while a shadow stretched on the floor as he entered.

If I chewed on my inner cheek any more I would soon have a hole through my cheek but I couldn’t help it when I saw Nate walk in with Lady Hale putting one heel in front of the other next to him. Red leather pants sat on her like a second skin and a black corset top tied in the back showed off her small waist while it pushed her breasts up to her chin. A braid started from the top of her head tied with a red leather band and fell down her back while her cane tapped against the chessboard floor.

My head turned somewhat reluctantly and though I was afraid of what I’d see I still looked at Darian who gave away nothing as far as how he felt but he stepped closer to me and his anger radiated from his skin and filled the corners of the room.

“Now do you understand why I kill people?” He grunted and looked menacingly at Nate as he walked toward us.
