Chapter 138
If the deepest form of pure sadness had a word, the one where everything died and rotted leaving behind a soul-crushing void- I would use it right now as I looked at Darian’s face. They say the eyes are a mirror to a person’s soul, if that’s the case then I just saw Darian’s soul being crushed by the words of a five-year-old little girl. His five-year-old little girl.
Ophelia had told her daughter that he was dead, that her father didn’t exist while Darian had gone through hell, dragging me through it with him, to get her
back.
How are we supposed to convince a young girl to go with a man that she doesn’t know? We were all strangers to her.
“You’re the King,” Kiera observed and leaned her head against the woman’s hip as she gazed at Darian.
His eyes glimmered with a mix of joy and pain as he gazed down at her features which were growing to look a lot like him.
She had his eyes.
“I am,” he answered and forced his voice to a softer tone.
She pouted her lips when she looked at her stuffed bunny, lifting it to her chest and being somewhere else in her thoughts.
“You want to kill my mommy,” I froze when her whispers reached my ears and everyone stood quietly around, watching her.
Kiera was just a child, she was a pup who needed safety and love but Ophelia was telling her that Darian wanted her mother dead.
No child should hear those things, even if she doesn’t know who Darian is to her, Ophelia had manipulated the poor girl’s mind into thinking that he was evil. All she saw now, looking up at him through her big doe eyes, was a monstrous king who wanted to harm her mother.
How bad could Darian’s radar have been not to know the basket case he was having a child with?
I’d met a lot of rotten people in my life but this was by far the worst of them, everyone gathered in one room except for an Alpha or two who were off living a calm life that they didn’t deserve. For some ungodly reason, Emanuel popped up in my head, he never popped up before when I was angry, he used to be an object of my happy thoughts but I guess a lot of things had changed.
I was peeling at the nail beds on my thumb using my index finger, it was the only way to still my nerves while the wounds in my mouth healed from all the
chewing.
Mr. Light snaked a hand around Ophelia’s waist, his black hair was gelled back with thick strands of grey shining through like neat highlights and his ash- brown eyes relaxed as he looked at Darian.
They wanted to see him physically break in front of their eyes, they wanted to witness the fall of the King but that’s what I don’t understand- how could they think that he would ever give them the pleasure?
There had to be some way that we could make Kiera realize who Darian was to her, that he wasn’t just a King but that he was actually her father.
The spotlight was finally turned away from me and I could think without the conceding gazes and obnoxious laughter of everyone who loved to watch us like their favorite play- to them I was still a pawn and Darian the puppet master who pulled my strings.
I had to figure out a way to make Kiera see the truth but how do you speak to a five-year-old about her father who she believes to be dead?
Shit, come on, Hazel, think of something. There has to be something I can do.
“Kiera,” I wasn’t sure where I was going with this but I had to do something so I decided to go with the flow and see where it took me.
“Yes,” she smiled.
I squatted down to be at her eye level and she pressed the top of her against the woman while she squirmed in place- she was either restless or nervous but
I couldn’t tell which.
“Have you been in that room before?” I asked and pointed behind me to the room that Darian and I had hidden in.

Her little head bobbed up and down and I nodded in response.
“Do you like coloring?”
She shook her head.
“That’s where I get the shots-”
“That’s enough, sweetheart,” Ophelia snapped.
I looked up, and a burning rage rose from my legs to my chest and up my mind turning my face red from the blood rush and the heat that warmed my skin.
They were doing something to that girl and Ophelia was a part of it. They were subjecting her to something and I couldn’t stop seeing the drawing of the lonely girl sitting on a blanket in the middle of a flower-covered field.
“Do you like flowers, Keira?” I asked as I slowly rose to my feet.
With each heavy breath, I pushed my chest out and tried to soften my gaze when I looked at her.
Kiera smiled from ear to ear and her lips pulled back over her teeth as she nodded gleefully.
“I know a place with thousands of flowers in every color you can think of, they cover an entire field under the sun and it’s like running on green-colored clouds,”
Kiera’s eyes sparkled and her lips rounded.
“I’ll take you there someday,” I winked.
But first, I’m going to try not to rip your mother’s head off.
Trixy growled in the back of my mind and Darian’s anger was enticing my own, doubling the strength and the magnitude.
