Chapter 153
It was eerie and different here, it wasn’t like in the city. They may not have changed anything but they weren’t looking after it either, not like they were in other places. The only clean part was the forest line, everything on the other side had grown in and vets had twisted like a wall.
There was a different vibe, a different danger.
I looked around and didn’t see anything…that’s odd, I saw nothing.
“Where is everyone?” I asked and turned on my heels.
There was nobody here. When I looked up toward the pavement I could see people walking carelessly but they didn’t even glance down toward Old Town. Was it because they were used to it or was there something else that Gabe wasn’t telling me?
“Let’s just go,” he said calmly and put his hand on my lower back.
I don’t think so. I thought we had moved past the times when I was kept in the dark about things.
When I stepped away from Gabe and he took his hand back he heaved a sigh.
Both of us turned our heads when the sound of a branch cracking in the woods echoed out through the darkness.
“We should really go now,” he seethed.
He was antsy- nervous even.
A wind blew in and rustled the leaves on the trees, it brushed against my cheek and the smell seeped up my nose- all my senses peeked and my bones
stiffened.
That scent, it was the same scent I’d smelled the night of the Ball, pungent and sweet, and it was what the woman at the Council smelled like. The human.
“Gabriel, where the hell are we?”
His eyes fell but his shoulders were rigid.
“On the other side of those woods is the human border. They live not too far away from here, which is why we don’t come here a lot,”
“Why not?”
“They’ve been known to hunt around the woods close to Old Town, therefore we made sure to steer clear,”
Something flashed in his eyes. Nah, there is something that he isn’t telling me..
Sure the humans live there and no werewolf wants to be acquainted with them- just as they don’t want anything to do with us, other than turn the heads of our wolves into nice ornaments or peel the fur from our skin.
“Spit it out, Gabriel,”
He cocked his head and pressed his lips in a firm line.
“The Royal Guards patrol those woods daily. We advise our people to steer clear because when a human enters our territory, they do not return back home and we don’t want any casualties,”
The sounds became louder from within the forest and it twisted Gabe’s face into a worrisome frown- but that was the first frown all afternoon so I allowed
He took my hand and dragged me away from Old Town, up the graveled path, and past the old tree that looked like it could be a whole other kind of portal. The branches twisted and turned and the glorious crown was filled with tipping leaves.

Chapter 153
“So we’re advised not to be in Old Town huh,” I pouted when we were back on the pavement.
Gabe could easily handle his own against humans, they were ants compared to him, compared to all of us really, which is why I couldn’t understand this frenzy he was in.
“For the people, it’s an advisement, one they can follow the advice if they want but it’s not a rule,” he turned his head and narrowed his eyes on mine, “for you, it’s a rule.” He ordered.
“You and Darian are way too comfortable throwing these makeshift rules in my face,”
First I wasn’t allowed to leave the pack, and now I’m not allowed in Old Town, not that I saw any reason in going there again other than the tranquility of the empty houses and streets but to make it a rule felt unnecessary.
