Chapter 179
All I wanted to do was peel that woman’s face off and hand it to her.
“When will it wear off?” I asked through seething teeth.
He shrugged and as a harsh breeze pulled in he shivered. So weak.
How are humans not extinct yet? They hurt so easily, one nick and they’ll die of an affection, eat a poisonous plant and they can die from asphyxiation. Sure, we are vulnerable to wolfsbane but that’s it, you would need a vast knowledge of herbs and plant life to find other plants venomous to a werewolf,
“I’m not sure but soon I think, I used up the last of it for this meeting.”
“And there’s no more left after that?”
He shook his head and I sighed my shoulders sunk and the worms in my stomach woke up and wiggled around- because it took until now for me to realize the timing of everything.
The meetings.
Kiera and Matilda being taken.
The note and the message.
It was all planned around one thing.
“That’s why Zade is coming, your job is done and they can’t veil your cent anymore.”
“No they can, but they can’t tie it to you without your blood which makes it sort of water. Unless you’re willing to offer up another drop?”
“Watch it.” I warned.
Something unusual shifted on his face and was that.. yes, it was, Angus was smiling His liga stretched out and his eyes glimmered, a genuine heartfelt smile that reached his eyes and it was softer than any smile I had seen before
Maybe that was another human thing, being able to smile without there seeming to be an agenda behind it. Or maybe I’m just damaged enough to think that everyone is hiding something.
Whatever it was it suited him.
Angus pointed his finger at me and his eyes played over my face.
“They’re wrong about you,” he said.
“You’re not a helpless little girl in need of a white knight, are you?”
I scoffed but couldn’t help the smile that mimicked his but rougher and more defensive.
“No, I’m not, sorry to disappoint,”
“No disappointment here. I’ve been following you for months, creepy I know, but I’ve come to realize a thing or two,”
I was intrigued, maybe it was a trap but nevertheless, I felt safe enough to cross my arms and cock my head as I made myself comfortable.
“Oh yeah, what’s that?”
The wind was dancing around us, thrashing between us in waves and lifting the leaves that hadn’t been raked. A beautiful full moon was centered in the sky with a glowing light that always spoke to my heart and made every weary night feel just a tad shorter.

Chapter 179
“You don’t need him, Hasel, but he sure as hell needs you. I think God made him King so that you would be Queen. A Valeria under your ruling might be a Valeria I could tolerate living in.”
His entire face shifted so carelessly with whatever emotion he was feeling at the time. Like right now, for example, his features were soft and his shoulders sacked in relaxation while a smile lined his face and his blue eyes glimmered joyously.
Fascinating.
But everything he said, he was goading me, right? He couldn’t truly think those things. He hated me and I hated him, that’s how it was, that was the natural order of things but I didn’t see fear in his eyes or a hurry to leave on his part.
This was a change of mind if I ever saw one. He went from trying to coerce me into going against Darian and now the human was putting me on a throne next to the King. Hell, he was putting a crown on my head and I could feel my neck being weighed down by it.
The palace had lights across the foundation, carefully illuminating the stone but where we stood, the light didn’t reach. I was staring at his piercing blue eyes and took in his soft features. When Angus didn’t talk, move, or fight, he was remarkably similar to us but from what I had heard, humans were savages, wanting nothing else than to wipe Valeria clean off werewolves and establish a new hierarchy.
“Hazel,” Angus called.
The smile was still there but a little more gloomy than before and he dropped his arms to his sides and let them just hang there while his jacket fell open.
“I’m sorry,” he said aloud. “Everyone has a part to play and I had to play mine,”
I smiled and stepped closer but he backed away.
“You tried but you also stopped. Thank you,” I said thank you, I wasn’t sure why but I said it and I saw his eyes furrow and his lids grow heavy,
“Getting you to fight with us was a wish… it wasn’t my job,”
My mouth was slightly agape and my lips turned dry from the mindless breaths I took while staring at his contorted face.
People speaking in vague riddles was amongst my least favorite things but when it came from a human, it downright pissed me off.
“What do you mean “My sentence was cut short when a figure appeared as if from nowhere behind him, a shadow cast over him like a black veil, and my wolf stepped up faster than she ever had.
I looked behind Angus who didn’t seem at all afraid of the demon standing behind him. Close enough so their shoulders rubbed against each other.
“Five seconds,” Zade said and I looked around.
Five seconds until what?
“You’re a brave man, Angus, I will make sure that your family knows it,” he added whilst looking at me through hooded eyes.
“What the hell is going on?” I seethed.
I walked closer but Angus stepped back, he kept me at a distance and lowered his head.
“I really am sorry,” his voice dropped an octave. Zade called him brave but I didn’t see brave, I saw a scared young man who was in over his head.
Before I could ask him why or cuss out Zade for everything he’s done I was blocked from seeing either of them when a man, dressed in the dark uniform of the Royal Guards stepped in front of me.
I listened to Angus suck the air in through his wide-open mouth and then I heard a loud thud. The Guard threw him across the ground and his body rolled for a few meters before it stopped. Blood ran down his nose and open cuts marred his face. The Guard reached down and circled his fingers around Angus’s neck. His eyes bulged and chocking pleads were slipping from his tongue as he clawed at the hand cutting off his air. But he didn’t have to suffer for long.
The snap of his neck breaking sent the birds flying from the branches of the trees around us and the leaves fluttered to the ground.

“No,” I didn’t realize that I had said it until the word was out for the wind to hear and left behind a bitter taste on my lips.
My balance faltered, I fell back and clutched my stomach when it felt like someone punched the air out of my lungs.
Moving back 1 hit something. Someone.
I hadn’t sensed him coming but I should’ve known,
My chest rose and fell heavily with each trying breath and I turned to face him while holding my head high.
Darian furrowed his brows and his dark eyes were illuminated by the moon- the only other witness to a man being killed and me speaking out for his life which I should’ve ended myself,
“No?” He asked.
