Chapter 199

“Well it’s a shame that your future Queen chooses her own life over her people, of course enticed by her King to do so I’m certain,” the Elder’s voice scraped my ears like thorns when I walked out. He lifted his hand about to give another grand speech when his eyes rounded and landed on me.

“Well, well, well,” his lips curled over his teeth in a grin and I walked past Guards and warriors, humans, Rogues, and Councilmen as I made my way to stand in front of Darian.

“What the fuck is she doing?” Gabe seethed behind me covered in guts and blood.

It took a while to walk over to him, every step sent a shooting pain up my stomach and it only got worse. A gust of air swept around me and Darian stood by my side.

“I warned you.” He grabbed my wrist but before he could pull me after him, Zade’s dark voice rose above us all.

“Let her go.” The anger in his voice startled me and I turned to face him. Zade walked closer and Darian blocked him.

“I won’t hurt her,” he said and searched me warily.

Darian didn’t step aside, nor did he answer, he followed Zade’s movements and stood as a shield.

“Something is wrong with her. What have you done?” He furrowed his brows and scanned my face.

“What’s the matter, Demon?” The Elder spat with a deep distaste for the man he claimed was his ally.

Zade pressed his lips into a firm line and his eyes left heated traces down my body.

“I can’t hear anything,” he murmured huskily under his breath. “I can’t hear a single thought. Why can’t I read your mind?”

Hearing him say those words took a load off my mind, I’d been terrified that he would read my thoughts and find out I was pregnant. If he did I’m sure my life would’ve been over by now.

“Maybe you lost your powers,” I grinned but Zade shook a heavy head.

“That’s impossible. I can hear every thought of the people here. Except yours, of course,” he spat and looked at Darian. It dawned on me that I never thought to ask that, Darian was the King, he knew everything about everything that went on in Valeria, so reading his mind would be invaluable.

“You can’t read his mind?” I asked.

“He can’t read the mind of Lycan’s,” Darian explained and his lips pulled up in a cocky grin.

“Lucky for me there aren’t a lot of those left,” Zade spat and matched the deranged look in Darian’s eyes.

I gulped and stopped myself from touching my stomach. He couldn’t read Lycan’s- which meant he couldn’t read the babies but that didn’t explain why he couldn’t read me.

“Step back, Demon.” The Elder ordered and walked up to us.

His lips turned in a snarl and he eyed me with a psychotic glare. That man was deranged in ways not known by even Darian. He was starving for power but had no idea how to control it. It wasn’t just about sitting on a throne and barking orders, it took humility and resilience, something he lacked altogether.

“The numbers speak for themselves, you won’t stand a chance against us. Perhaps you will survive, but what is a King without a kingdom?”

The Elder reached out to touch my face and Darian’s hand shot out and grabbed him before he reached.

“The King can stand down but he will always be too strong, luckily for me, nature found a balance- he keeps his powers only as long as you live to strengthen him,” he said quietly. From behind his head, I could movement in the trees far down and out merged a dozen other men. They gathered with Zade and I tried to see where they belonged but couldn’t smell them. Don’t tell me they’re Demons.

When Darian held the Elder’s hand I noticed an open wound on his palm. The blood was stale but the wound hadn’t healed and the blood looked like coal.

Chapter 199

Darian shoved his hand away and grabbed his throat, I heard the crushing of his airways and stepped to the side as I saw the life drain from the Elder’s eyes. Before we could relish in his passing, a damn black fog circled us and a hand slammed at Darian’s chest, forcing him back as the Elder fell to his knees.

Zade looked at me as he stood with the others.

“Why are you protecting him?” I asked Zade. His Demon friend remained close to the Elder and when Darian lunged at them, the Demon stepped between. Zade evaporated and appeared in front of me.
