Chapter 55
Chapter 55
-APOLLO-
“No,” I tell my mother, feeling deleated. “If it helps convince you that I am serious, we can leave now”
She looks worn out as she whispers, “I’m only making such a fuss because you left me no choice. Apollo I had to do what needed to be done
I knew exactly why she being this way, I’ve known my mother my entire life, she didn’t need to give an explana
Okay,” I respond, doing my best to keep her calm. “You should get dressed.”
She smiles. “I will, but first I need to call Jada to let her know you’re here and ready for dinner.”
Inod, “gett
dressed in the meantime.”
Her excitement spills over as she bugs me. “This makes me so happy, my son. I’ve been waiting for this for so long”
At least she’s happy, even though I feel miserable inside. The only person I wanted to have dinner with was my mate, and sadly, that may never!
If my mother reacted this strongly just because I didn’t pick up some of her calls, I couldn’t imagine how she’d feel it she discovered knew who my mate was and kept the truth from her all along.
Watching her grab her phone and dial Jada, I take the chance to turn around and search for my sister. To my surprise, she’s already night behind me
I can see the guilt on her face as she whispers, “What did you have to sacrifice to calm mom down!”
I play with her hair a bit to distract her. “Why do you think had to make a sacrifion?” I ask.
Her expression turns sad as she replies, “Because mother just walked off all happy while you look so down.”
1 take a smile, “You’re mistaken, Toya. Everything’s fine, I promise.”
She doesn’t look convinced, so I take her hand and lead her to the entertainment room.
“How about you find something
for you to worry about anymore.”
to watch on TV?” Isuggest. I’m here to take care of everything and make sure you and mom are okay. There’s nothing
I see hesitation in her eyes, but eventually, she sits down and starts to relax.
Once she’s settled, I glance at my phone. I let without saying anything to Lana, and I wanted an excuse to call her.
Suddenly, the realization hits me that I didn’t have anyone keeping an eye on her.
quickly dial Jake’s number
“Hey,” he answers on the first ring.
“Can you keep an eye on Lana for me?” ask “won’t be home for a while, and I want to make sure she doesn’t get into any trouble while I’m gone”
He goes quiet for a moment before saying “Sure thing, Alpha. Anything else you need from me?”
“No, that’s all. Just keep her safe while I’m not around.”
I know he might think it’s strange that I only care about keeping Lana safe and not mentioning anyone else in the family. But right now, I don’t care what he thinks I’m too troubled by everything else going on.
“Okay, boss,” he replies before ending the call
Chapter 55
At least Jake can give me updates on Lana while I’m stuck out here.
Toya looks up
up at me, and it hits me only then that she was listening to my conversation.
“Who is Lana?” she asks.
Damn.
I’ve never talked to her about my step–sister before I made sure to keep Lana’s name out of many discussions. Since my mother didn’t like La ofer mother, I knew she wouldn’t bring them up around my sister either..
“She’s the daughter of “I hesitate, unsure whether to tell her,
“You don’t have to share if you a
u don’t want to,” she cuts in. “I was just curious. I’ve never heard you worry about any girl besides me and mom before
It’s true. Lana is the only other gel I feel this way about. I didn’t want to drag my younger sister into my troubles, so I choose to stay quiet.
“Focus on

lher. “I need to get ready for dinner.”
She frowns. “Mom’s making you go, isn’t she?”
I shrug. “I was the one who suggested it”
She sighs, clearly unconvinced. “I know you’re only agreeing to this because I asked for your help. I don’t want you to be unhappy because of me, brother.”
“Hey,” I scold her gently. “Why would I ever be unhappy because of you? I promised her a long time ago that I’d go to dinner I should’ve kept that promise sooner.
“Whatever you say,” she retorts, turning her attention back to the TV.
Taking advantage of her distraction, I slip out of the room. It still bothers me that I never got the chance to talk to Lana before leaving, it’s not like could have told her my mother was freaking out and my sister had asked me to come home because of it.
I often kept this part of my family life hidden from everyone, even my father. He never knew about my mother’s frequent outbursts.
1 wanted to protect her at all costs. I didn’t care what I had to go through as long as my mother and sister were okay
My mother is the type of person who values her reputation above All else. She wouldn’t want anyone to know about her breakdowns at home, which is why I’ve kept the truth to myself. To protect her.
As I stare at my phone, a message pops up, I feel a rush of both ariety and surprise when I see it’s from Lana,
Fuck.
I felt completely at a loss. All this time, I had been toying with the idea of messaging her, just hoping to get a glimpse of her thoughts after I left without a word. I was genuinely surprised when she reached out to me
I wanted to reply, overwhelmed by the urge to share iny feelings, but the logical part of me held back.
Deep down, I realized that ignoring Lana might be the wisest choice. The less she knew, the better it would be for her in the long run,
When I got home, I planned to have a proper conversation with her. But for now, it was best not to respond.
